The superheroes of DC Comics have appeared in one animated form or another over the decades. From their start in the mid-1960s to the animated TV and movie universes of the 21st century, they have been voiced by many of the top actors of their time.

Some of these people remained exclusively voice actors. Their contribution to the animated universes remains historic in nature. Others, whether short- or long-term, voiced important characters then continued to work as live actors in television and the movies. Some of these individuals are iconic in both roles.

10 Casey Kasem - voiced Robin the Boy Wonder for nearly two decades

Kasem worked with Olan Soule for 15 years.

Technically, Kasem isn't an actor. Though he appeared in a few films in the 60s and cameo appearances in later years, his focus was on radio. Yet, he had plenty of time to voice an important DC character for nearly two decades while also helming the microphone for the syndicated radio show American Top 40.

Beginning with The Adventures of Batman in 1967, Kasem voiced Robin the Boy Wonder for nearly two decades. His longest term was on ABC's Super Friends and its various incarnations from 1973 to 1985. During that tenure, he was paired with Olan Soule, an actor who voiced Batman for almost the same amount of time as Kasem did with Robin.

9 Mark Hamill - portrayed the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series

To some fans, Mark Hamill is the ultimate Joker.

Batman: The Animated Series wouldn't have been the same without Mark Hamill's portrayal as the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. While maniacal, he was also a character that viewers connected with. His portrayal of the animated villain encouraged later voice actors to emulate the style.

Of course, before his voice role on the show, Hamill was a live actor in shows like General Hospital and movies such as The Big Red One. Oh, and he has been part of a small science-fiction film franchise for over four decades. In-between those appearances he has also voiced other DC characters. Namely, the Trickster, a member of Flash's Rogues Gallery, and Solomon Grundy.

8 Tim Daly - voiced the Man of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series

"Wings" Tim Daly was Superman in The Animated Series.

There's something about Daly's characterization of the Man of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series that hits all the right marks. He doesn't make his voice any lower or higher when he goes from Clark to Superman. It remains steady for most of the time. Yet, Daly shows grief and anger when necessary.

This is due to his live acting skills before and after the role. Previous to his role as Superman, Daly made his name on the NBC comedy Wings. Later, he shifted to dramatic roles in ABC's The Practice and CBS's Madam Secretary. From time to time, he would head back to the sound booth to become the Man of Steel again for DC animated movies like Justice League: Doom and Batman/Superman: Public Enemies.

7 George Newbern - fans know him as Superman in Justice League

Viewers might not know the name but they'll recognize the roles George Newbern has been in. The most famous might be as Danny, Rachel, and Monica's neighbor on Friends who had an awkward relationship with his sister. Beyond that, he was a regular on ABC's Scandal and in the Father of the Bride movie series.

DC animated universe fans know him as Superman in Justice League and subsequent series and movies. Newbern replaced Tim Daly when he left Superman: TAS. Since then, the two have gone back-and-forth on the role. In the end, viewers might have a hard time telling the difference between the two.

6 Michael Rosenbaum - voiced the Wally West version of Kid Flash & The Flash in the first incarnation of Teen Titans & the Justice League series

Rosenbaum was Luthor on "Smallville" and Flash on "Justice League."

Here's an actor with a rare pedigree. Not only does he voice several DC characters but he also appeared as one on a long-running series. As someone behind the scenes, he voiced the Wally West version of Kid Flash and The Flash in the first incarnation of Teen Titans and the Justice League series. Additionally, he voices various characters in Batman Beyond and its spin-off The Zeta Project.

As a live actor, Rosenbaum was part of Smallville's cast in a minor role -- Lex Luthor. He appeared as Clark Kent's former friend and eventual enemy over 154 episodes. On top of this, he briefly jumped over to Marvel to play the character of Martinex in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

5 Clancy Brown - started his run as Lex Luthor in Superman: The Animated Series

"Starship Troopers" actor Clancy Brown voices Lex Luthor.

Fans might not recognize this actor's name but they would certainly know his face and voice. The most famous of these is Lex Luthor. He started his run as the billionaire turned villain in Superman: The Animated Series and continued it through the Justice League incarnations and various animated-universe movies.

Though he's spent a lot of time in the sound booth, Brown has also appeared in numerous live-action television shows and movies. Among the most famous are two roles. The first is as the evil prison guard captain in 1994's The Shawshank Redemption. The second is his role as Sergeant Zim in the 1997 classic Starship Troopers.

4 Nathan Fillion - voiced Green Lantern in four films, including Justice League: Doom & The Death of Superman

"Firefly and "Castle" actor Fillion has voiced GL.

Captain Mal Reynolds of Fireflythe evil Caleb of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, of course, Richard Castle of Castle. These are some of the many characters Nathan Fillion has played since he started his TV and movie career in the early '90s. He might be one of the most famous faces in various genres. Additionally, he's a perfect hero. This is has been seen in several programs, including The Rookie.

It's why voicing Green Lantern in several DC animated movies made perfect sense. As of this writing, Fillion voiced the Emerald Knight in four films, including Justice League: Doom and The Death of Superman. On top of that, he voiced the top ring-wielder in a few Robot Chicken episodes.

3 CCH Pounder - voiced Amanda Waller in Justice League & Justice League Unlimited

It made perfect sense for NCIS: New Orleans actress CCH Pounder to voice the character of Amanda Waller in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. She's brassy but gentle. Her portrayal of the Task Force X leader is powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with Batman and Superman while, behind the scenes, she tried to stop them from being heroes.

The live acting roles she has played before and after her role as Waller haven't been so tyrannical. After playing one-off parts, Pounder got her first feature role in Cop Rock. From there, it was a stint as Dr. Angela Hicks in ER and Detective Claudette Wyms on The Shield. Her most endearing role is as the seemingly immortal Mrs. Frederic on Warehouse 13.

2 Diedrich Bader - voiced the Caped Crusader on Batman: The Brave & the Bold

Diedrich Bader was Batman and is now Booster Gold.

Bader wasn't known for his live-action heroics. Most fans knew him from his comedic role as Oswald on The Drew Carey Show. Yet, those who created shows under the DC animated universe knew he had the pipes to voice its superheroic characters. It started with Zeta in The Zeta Project and continued in his role as the Caped Crusader on Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Even with his job as the king of superheroes in his animated universe, Bader stretched. Eventually, he became the voice of Guy Gardner in Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Booster Gold on Justice League Action. On the small screen, the actor remains within the comedy world. His most recent roles have been on Space Force and the ABC sitcom American Housewife.

1 Arleen Sorkin - played Harley Quinn on Batman: The Animated Series

Who knew Arleen Sorkin's Harley Quinn would become so big?

A list like this isn't complete without Arleen Sorkin. The actress began her career in 1984 as the ditzy Calliope Jones Bradford on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. A few years later, Sorkin appeared on the FOX sitcom Duet and reboot named Open House. Eventually, she returned to Days of Our Lives to reprise her role as Bradford.

However, in-between those live acting roles, Sorkin played a character named Harley Quinn on Batman: The Animated Series. Originally Joker's sidekick, Harley eventually stepped out on her own in the comic book world. The rest is illustrated history.
