Oscar-nominated director of Promising Young Woman Emerald Fennell has been tapped to write the theatrical adaptation of Zatanna

Fennell saw her directorial debut with dark comedy Promising Young Woman, which has earned five Oscar nominations, including best picture and screenplay. As reported by Variety, the director will pen the newest DC Extended Universe installment from Warner Bros. DC Films and Bad Robot Productions with the now-confirmed Zatanna film. This will be the character's first appearance in the DC franchise.

The role of Zatanna has not yet been cast. However, this will not be Zatanna's first live-action appearance, as she was previously portrayed by Serinda Swan in The CW's Smallville.

A possible Zatanna film or television series was teased at AT&T's Analyst & Investor Day 2021, along with other projects like Static Shock and Blue Beetle. Another report from July 2020 also teased a possible Zatanna project that would be entirely separate from J.J. Abrams' Justice League Dark series for HBO Max. The film currently has no cast or release date.

The character of Zatanna Zatara, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, is a powerful sorcerer in DC Comics who can cast spells by saying what she wants backward, similar to her father Zatara the Magician. While this will be her first introduction to the DCEU, Zatanna has also appeared in several DC animated series like Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice.
