You Brought Me the Ocean is a new LGBTQ+ young adult graphic novel that stars the DC Comics character Aqualad.
The story will be a new take on the Aqualad origin story, focusing on the character's life in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Aqualad, who is named Jake Hyde in the novel (seemingly a play on Jackson Hyde), has to deal with the with onset of superhuman powers while in the midst of falling for his classmate.
The graphic novel is written by Alex Sánchez and illustrated by Julie Maroh. Sánchez has written many popular young adult novels, including Rainbow Boys and The God Box. Maroh is well-known for her romance graphic novel Blue Is the Warmest Color, which was adapted into a film back in 2013.
"I believe it will be the type of book that fans will read twice -- the first time, compelled to turn pages to find out what happens next, and the second time to linger over Julie’s spectacularly beautiful imagery," Sánchez said of the graphic novel. "I hope the book will do what graphic novels do bes -- tell a story on two level -- through words and art.”
You Brought Me the Ocean will join DC's line of young adult graphic novels, which include Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and Teen Titans: Raven. The graphic novel will drop on June 9, 2020 with a retail price of $16.99. Its cover, as well as a few unlettered preview pages, can be found below.
