Created by Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily, the original Hourman -- Rex Tyler -- debuted in Adventure Comics #48 in 1940. The character is a scientist who develops a miraculous vitamin he dubs Miraclo, which grants him superhuman strength and speed for one hour at a time. Using his newfound superpowers, he serves on such teams as the Justice Society of America, the Freedom Fighters, the All-Star Squadron and the Justice League. Rex was succeeded by his son Rick, who became the new Hourman in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Like his father, Rick would serve on the Justice Society of America and the Justice League, along with Infinity Inc. The third Hourman was an android named Matthew Tyler.

The character of Hourman has had a handful of appearances outside of the comics, including in Justice League UnlimitedBatman: The Brave and the BoldDC's Legends of Tomorrow and Stargirl. There were even plans for a live-action solo series on The CW in 2013, though it never made it off the ground.
