Generally in alternate futures, it’s a safe bet that all of the heroes are taking massive losses while the villains are rolling in the victories. The villains have somehow figured out a way to defeat their long-time opponent, and they’re finally able to rule over a city or planet in peace.

But Future State had something else in mind for some of DC’s biggest villains. Many of them were defeated to make room for other characters. Sometimes to elevate a new villain, an existing villain has to be defeated, and other times it’s just a good way to display just how much things have changed when even iconic villains can't stay on top.

10 Lex Luthor Loses Control Of His Planet

Lex Luthor is surprisingly absent in much of Future State. But there’s one exception to this: Superman vs. Imperious Lex. The character is ruling over the planet Lexor, but after losing his free source of labor, he has to beg to be let into the United Planets.

But after finding an invaluable resource to the rest of the United Planets, he tries to get out of it to make a profit. But after Superman takes a handful of the crystals and they’re able to synthesize them, Lex is allowed out of the United Planets and is unable to find a buyer for the only valuable resource he has.

9 Solaris Is Forced To Run Away After Losing His Advantage Over Superman

The Super-Sun Solaris makes what is technically his “first” appearance in the timeline in Superman/Wonder Woman. But Clark is long gone and it’s Jonathan Kent guarding the planet, while Yara Flor is the Wonder Woman in question.

First off, Solaris is briefly embarrassed at himself for getting involved with a battle against a sun god. Then later, Yara Flor is able to take him out with a gun that forces Solaris to burn up all of his hydrogen and turn blue, making Superman able to harm him and forcing him to escape.

8 Legion of Doom Is Defeated Before The Series Started

The Legion of Doom is a little different in the future, and it’s made up of a number of villains who’ve had run-ins with the Justice League of that era. But while the Legion of Doom has a plan to shut down the Justice League once and for all...none of it matters.

The Hyperclan takes the entire group out before their plan can even start. It’s embarrassing, but the Legion of Doom is easily defeated and forgotten about before the book’s main plot begins.

7 Brainiac Is Defeated By Jon and Supergirl While They're New On The Job

Brainiac is defeated before Future State even begins. He challenges Jon Kent and Kara Kent to a battle not long after Jon takes on the role of Superman.

Kara and Jon defeat him, with Kara having burned off enough of Brainiac that a scientist is able to come up with a way to invent a clone of Brainiac known as Brain Cells. Though Brain Cells outsmarts Jon briefly, in the end, he and Kara work together again and outsmart Brain Cells, forcing him to undo the damage he’s done to Metropolis.

6 Mirror Master Is Destroyed By Peacemaker

Mirror Master works with Peacemaker on the Suicide Squad. Along with the rest of the team, they go to Earth-3 and try to retrieve Amanda Waller. This mission doesn’t go well for any of them, but Mirror Master gets controlled by Hypnotic Woman and convinced to work with Waller’s Justice Squad.

But Peacemaker has a plan against this and uses one of the explosives to bring Mirror Master to an end.

5 The Planet Of Titan Is Sealed Away Forever

The Planet of Titan is a new group of villains in Bendis’ Legion of Super-Heroes. The people of Titan weren’t villains before but they’ve been turned into villains in this new era.

After getting in touch with the United Planets, the Titanians were disgusted by all other sentient beings that weren’t like them. The Titanians were imprisoned on the other side of the galaxy for the rest of time for their crimes against the United Planets, which involved destroying society on several planets.

4 Black Manta Dies From Being Introduced To Earth-3 Atmosphere

Black Manta is a member of Peacemaker’s Suicide Squad. They never explain why or how, he’s just a member and on Earth-3 with everyone else. The character doesn’t even get to go out in a blaze of glory.

Black Manta, along with everyone else, finds the environment of Earth-3 incredibly toxic to his body. His body simply shuts down as he begins bleeding from his helmet, and he doesn’t make it back.

3 Cheetah Dies Fighting A Fake Martian Manhunter

Cheetah is another member of the Suicide Squad that goes to Earth-3. She holds up considerably better than every other member of the team, but it doesn’t matter. In the end, she goes up against a member of Waller’s Justice Squad.

When they seem like they can’t win, Waller uses one of her explosives to blow up the surrounding area, taking out Cheetah and other Justice Squad members with them.

2 Mad Hatter Is Wiped Out By The Magistrate

Mad Hatter Is A Criminal In Gotham

Mad Hatter works with the rest of the Magistrate in the Future State timeline after they’ve conquered Gotham. His tech allows the Magistrate to have access to some low-level mind control.

But unfortunately for him, the Magistrate eventually turns on him. That’s the downside of being useful but also having too much power. It can be turned around in a flash.

1 Scarecrow Is Tricked By Harley Quinn

Scarecrow has a hand in the formation of the Magistrate, or at least that’s how it appears as the group is being built. And by the time of Future State, he’s no longer Scarecrow at all. He’s taken up a high-ranking position as Jonathan Crane, bringing down other former villains.

He captures Harley Quinn but gets embarrassed by her duing in his attempt to bring in Black Mask, allowing her to escape.
