DC Universe's upcoming Swamp Thing series has reportedly cast Friday the 13th star Derek Mears in the part of the titular creature.

As first reported by Splash Report and later confirmed by Bloody Disgusting, Mears has been chosen to wear the Swamp Thing suit. However, it appears Swamp Thing's human counterpart Alec Holland will be played by someone else.

Given recent reports that Swamp Thing will be a "hard R" horror series, it's unsurprising that Mears has been eyed for the role, considering his penchant for playing monsters on the big screen. Previously, he starred as Jason Voorhees in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th, the "classic" Predator in 2010's Predators and as the Cyclops in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

On the small screen, Mears has also already dabbled in the worlds of sci-fi and superheroes, having played a Kree captain in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Dwarfstar in The Flash. Additionally, he provided the voice for Corsac Albain in Rooster Teeth's RWBY.

This news comes as the latest in the string of Swamp Thing casting announcements. Previously, Crystal Reed (Gotham) was confirmed to play the series' female lead Abby Arcane, while Maria Sten (Straight Outta Compton) was enlisted as Liz Tremayne.

Executive produced by James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman, Swamp Thing is expected to premiere on DC Universe sometime in 2019.
