According to James Gunn, DC Studio’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be a darker take on the hero.

In a video released on Twitter and summarized on DC.com, Gunn revealed DC Studios’ upcoming slate of projects, including a new Supergirl film, and provided some details about this new version of the character. "In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents," Gunn explained. "Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more "f-ed up" Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far."

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on a comic book series of the same name written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes. "Tom has been one of the architects of this entire situation. He’s been one of the guys in the room with us, along with four or five other writers," Gunn explained. "I love his take on these characters. He just turns them slightly to be something very unique."

The comic version of Woman of Tomorrow was released in 2021 as part of DC Comics’ Infinite Frontier era. The story centered around Kara Zor-El/Supergirl dealing with the trauma of witnessing the destruction of Krypton and living under the shadow of her older cousin, Kal-El/Superman. When an alien girl named Ruthye seeks her help, she is pulled into a revenge mission which places further strain on her psyche.

Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, Supergirl made her first appearance in Action Comics #252 in 1959. Kara Zor-El has been a staple of the DC universe ever since, eventually getting her own series in 1972 and even debuting on the silver screen in 1984, played by Helen Slater. Her next appearance will be in Andy Muschietti’s upcoming The Flash movie, played by Sasha Calle. Details on the upcoming Woman of Tomorrow film are largely still unknown.
