A number of projects that make up James Gunn and Peter Safran's multi-year plan for the revamped DC Studios will be announced before the month of January is out.On Twitter, a fan inquired about a recent report from Variety, which implied that Gunn and Safran's interconnected vision for the newly-christened DC Universe currently only covers three years. The report also stated that Warner Bros. executives were open to the idea of keeping Ezra Miller on board as the DCU's Barry Allen/the Flash, despite the actor's numerous controversies. Gunn replied, "I don't know what's out there about Ezra but our slate is 8 to 10 years (but we will only be announcing some of it this month)." In the same thread, Gunn debunked reports that the character of Wonder Woman would be absent from the new DCU for its first three years.RELATED: James Gunn Is Working With Jim Lee to Better Coordinate DC Studios and Comics

In December 2022, Gunn confirmed that his and Safran's first project as DC's co-chairs would be a new Superman film, featuring a younger Man of Steel (implicitly during the hero's early days in Metropolis). At the time, Gunn announced that he and Safran would reveal more about their DCU slate in the new year, though did not offer a more specific window as to when. Given his most recent comments, however, fans can confidently expect the first "phase" (if you will) of Gunn and Safran's eight-to-ten-year plan for the DCU to be revealed sometime this month.

What's Next for the DCU?

Notably, 2023 is already packed with DCU films, albeit ones that were green-lit and produced prior to the Gunn-Safran regime. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to bow in March, followed by The Flash in June, Blue Beetle in August and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December. Despite Gunn and Safran seemingly pressing the reboot button on the DCU, some of these titles can still factor into the new chiefs' plans. (The character of Blue Beetle seems especially poised for big things.) A number of DC projects not set in the shared universe are also in the works. For starters, Joker: Folie à Deux -- the sequel to 2019's Joker -- is currently in production ahead of a 2024 release. Additionally, a sequel to 2022's The Batman is being developed, as are two spinoff series for HBO Max.

Gunn made his name in the world of superhero films thanks to his work writing and directing Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which is currently gearing up for its third and final big-screen entry. He made the jump to DC in 2021, writing and directing The Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to/soft reboot of the 2016 DCU film Suicide Squad. Gunn also wrote and co-directed The Suicide Squad's HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker, which premiered in early 2022 and has been renewed for a second season.
