While many of the heroes and teams of the DC Comics Universe are known for battling threats of either an Earthly or galactic kind, the DC Universe is also filled to the brim with magical threats that defy the logics of the universe altogether. For threats like that, many magical heroes are called upon for help.

During the Days of Judgement series, these magical heroes gathered together to form a group of protectors known as the Sentinels of Justice, who were sworn to protect the Earth from powerful threats and safeguard artifacts like the Spear of Destiny. Here are the ten most powerful members of that group.

10 Ragman

The first hero to be featured in the team is Ragman, aka Rory Regan. Depending on which era one would find Rory in, his backstory varies from Vietnam war veteran to the owner of a book and antique shop. After his father and his father’s friends are taken out by gangsters looking for money the old men found, Rory gained the power to absorb souls and their abilities after being electrocuted near the dying men.

He becomes proficient with magic, and wears a suit of rags that is said to hold the soul of each villain or criminal he stops in his vigilante career.

9 Doctor Occult

One hero who is not used quite as much as he could be is Doctor Occult. After he and his partner Rose were slated to become human sacrifices in a Satanic Cult ritual in 1899, they were saved by a mysterious group known as the Seven. They later trained in the art of magic and sorcery, and opened their own detective agency.

The two later were fused together, and Doctor Occult used his skills to prolong their lives into the modern day era of DC Comics. He joins the group in fighting demons and Asmodel, a fallen angel who stole the power of the Spectre.

8 Deadman

One of the more well known heroes of the group is none other than Boston Brand, aka Deadman. Boston is a ghost who had been a circus performer going by the moniker “Deadman”, but he was slain by a man nicknamed The Hook. The Hindu goddess Rama Kushna gave Boston the ability to possess people as he sought justice for his life being taken.

Working in and out of the city of Rama Kushna’s named Nanda Parbat, Boston teamed up with the team during the Days of Judgement series, helping restart the fires of hell to draw the demons back.

7 Tempest

One hero who joined the group much later in the history of the team was Garth, aka Tempest. Once Aquaman’s former sidekick Aqualad, Garth was also a prominent member of the Teen Titans and Titans, and was known for his proficiency with ancient Atlantian magic, making him a powerful threat to magical foes.

He was forced into the group when the team members began to be targeted by a group of Demonic gangsters known as the Diablos, and he and Aquaman began fighting a group of the gang above the Arctic Circle, drawing the attention of Wonder Woman and Sebastian Faust.

6 Faust

One of the most powerful magic users in the world joined the team during the Days of Judgement event and beyond, and that was the all powerful Sebastian Faust, son of Justice League villain Felix Faust. Trained by his father in the use of soul magic and beyond, his father sold his son’s soul to a demon for a natural affinity for magic.

Fighting not to give into the black magic his father practices, Sebastian joins the other magic wielders to fight off the demons of hell during Asmodel’s attack on Earth, and later helps when the Diablos begin targeting the group members.

5 Sentinel

One surprising member of the group would have to be one of the iconic JSA member, Alan Scott, the first known Green Lantern. Gaining his power from a mystical green flame in the form of a meteorite, he formed a ring that allowed him to use magic to form constructs.

When he joined the group, he had just formed a new JSA team and was going by the name Sentinel, after the Starheart became a permanent part of his body for a time. He joined the Phantom Stranger and Zatanna on a mission to hell to get his wife Molly’s soul back from the demon Neron.

4 Madame Xanadu

One member of the team who was not originally a full-time DC Comics character but rather a Vertigo character was Madame Xanadu. The youngest sister of Morgaine le Fay and the Lady of the Lake, she is descended from the Elder Folk, who were themselves survivors of the fall of Atlantis who evolved to become a race of beings known as homo magi.

Joining the team during the Day of Judgement series, she was attacked and disabled for a time by a crazed Spectre, who also took her eyes. She rallied the team at her place and works to restore the Rock of Eternity.

3 Phantom Stranger

One of the founding members of the group who was essential in bringing some of these characters into the fold was the Phantom Stranger. An immortal magical being with a mysterious past no one seems to fully know or understand, the Phantom Stranger is a close ally of Zatanna and helped save the world from the demonic invasion on Earth.

He is often met with mistrust from many other magic users and heroes alike, as his motivations and habit of invading personal lives alienate him somewhat. He also has omniscience, able to know and see everything about everyone whenever he meets them in person.

2 Raven

The second most powerful magic user on the team is hands down Raven, the half-human, half-demon daughter of the inter dimensional demon known as Trigon. A gifted teen hero who is able to separate her soul self from her body and fights to keep her father trapped inside the prison she fastened to her forehead, she is one of the most proficient magic wielders in the world.

She joined the team during the Days of Judgement event, working to stop Asmodel from destroying the Earth with his demonic armies and in the end was entrusted with protecting the Spear of Destiny.

1 Zatanna

The most powerful magic wielder and probably the most popular is Zatanna. The daughter of the great magician Zatara and her mother Sindella, one of the members of the race known as the homo magi, Zatanna is able to wield a great deal of magic in the DC Universe, often targeted by magical foes as a result of that.

Her backwards speaking spells are incredibly powerful, as is her vast collection of magical artifacts. She not only helped stop Asmodel and the armies of hell, but was targeted by the Diablos, half her soul drained by a succubus until the JSA stepped in to help her.
