At its “Super Powered YA” panel during this year’s New York Comic Con, DC Comics hosted the creative teams of its upcoming slate of young adult graphic novels, along with revealing never-before-seen artwork for each new project.
Shadow of the Batgirl
Shadow of the Batgirl, by writer Sarah Kuhn and artist Nicole Goux, is set to follow Cassandra Cain. Cass’s fan-favorite version of Batgirl was wiped away in DC’s main continuity after its New 52 soft reboot. While she has proven popular as Orphan, fans have been clamoring for her return to Batgirl, and Shadow will give them just that.
Gout and Kuhn also discussed the importance of “neurodiversity” in writing the story of Cass, a superhero who is traditionally shown having difficulty speaking.
Teen Titans: Beast Boy
Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo then discussed their forthcoming title, Teen Titans: Beast Boy, a follow up to their bestselling book within the same ongoing series, Teen Titans: Raven. As in their treatment of Raven, Garcia and Picolo will tell a more intimate, early story in Garfield Logan’s life.
Both Shadow of the Batgirl and Teen Titans: Beast Boy are set for release in 2020.
New Batman and Zatanna Graphic Novels
Closing out the panel were Danielle Paige (Mera: Tidebreaker) and Isaac Goodhart (Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale), as well as Stuart Moore and Chris Wildgoose, who are helming the adaptation of Marie Lu’s novel, Batman: Nightwalker.
The panel ended with more sneak peeks, with YA author,Alys Arden sharing early concept art from her and artist Jacquelin De Leon's upcoming Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend.
