Superheroes and villains are usually a fairly fashion-forward bunch and routinely update their wardrobe to suit the times. In some cases, an entire publisher's line of characters can get a costume overhaul to reflect big changes or reboots, which fans have seen most frequently from DC Comics over the last decade.

After the Flashpoint event altered the DC timeline, the New 52 universe was born and every character was updated with a new look. Some of these looks weren't very well-received, and the whole line underwent another soft reboot, with a few of the aesthetic issues worked out with much better redesigns. So today we are highlighting a few of the best costume redesigns from the DC Rebirth era.

10 JESSICA CRUZ/GREEN LANTERN

When Jessica Cruz first appeared during the New 52, it was because she was chosen by the multiversal Ring of Volthoom, which had previously possessed Power Ring of the Crime Syndicate of America. The Ring of Volthoom transformed Jessica into a new Power Ring and gave her a layered look that more resembled an alternate reality Guy Gardner than Hal Jordan.

The look wasn't the worst, but at the close of "The Darkseid War" and the lead into the Rebirth era, Jessica was able to rid herself of the Ring of Volthoom and she was inducted into the Green Lantern Corps officially, complete with a brand new GL costume that looked better than some of her teammates.

9 GREEN ARROW

The New 52 reboot saw a number of characters reduced in age as the timeline was truncated down to five years of superheroics, which gave Oliver Queen/Green Arrow a much more youthful appearance. His costume was also technologically advanced and armored up, which washed away much of the original character's style and influences.

His Rebirth outfit corrected many of these design issues, including returning his iconic goatee, but the new simplicity of the suit and toned-down color scheme updated his costume without overdoing it. Oliver's Rebirth costume is a great example of "keep it simple, stupid."

8 WONDER WOMAN

Diana Prince has worn a few different costumes as Wonder Woman, though rarely do they get much positive reaction if they differ too much from the original or classic design. The New 52 played it mostly safe with Wonder Woman's costume redesign and fans didn't see much innovation until the animated version of the character got her own costume upgrade.

Diana's Rebirth costume is very similar to her classic outfit, though it also incorporates a few of the tweaks made to the costume that was seen on the big screen version played by Gal Gadot. The new skirted and caped Wonder Woman returned to her golden armored roots while embracing her cinematic appearance.

7 STARFIRE

The New 52 had no shortage of controversial costume redesigns, though one of the most-discussed online was definitely the changes made to Starfire, both in her costume and personality. Starfire's barely-there costume was improved slightly during the DC You initiative, but the Rebirth redesign finally nailed it.

Her new costume reflected her position as a leader of the Teen Titans and this design would be emulated when her costume was given a cosmic upgrade when she joined with the Justice League Odyssey and headed to the stars as the team's resident alien warrior princess.

6 NIGHTWING

Dick Grayson has gone through a few interesting costume changes over the last couple of decades, having started his career as the first Robin before wearing various Nightwing costumes as well as his own version of the Batman suit when he filled in for Bruce Wayne after Final Crisis.

The New 52 returned Grayson to the role of Nightwing and darkened his costume with a red color scheme that blended him in with the Bat-family a bit more. After some time as a non-costumed spy, Grayson again returned as Nightwing in his old black and blue colors, with a sleeker design and brighter hue that better reflected Grayson's light-hearted nature.

5 BATGIRL

Barbara Gordon got arguably the biggest upgrade of the New 52 when her years as the paraplegic information-broker known as Oracle were altered and she returned to her original identity of Batgirl. Her initial New 52 costumes struggled to find the balance between Batman's tactical look and Barbara's own take on the costume.

The Burnside-era took Barbara in a new direction that was inspired by her TV costume from the 60s, but it wasn't until Sean Murphy redesigned the costume recently for Rebirth that fans saw the best update to her original comic costume. This look also fits her personality and separates her from the rest of the Gotham crowd.

4 SUPERMAN

Superman's New 52 redesign was emblematic of the problems experienced by many of the generic costumes of the New 52, as they attempted to create a sense of unity among the various character's costumes and styles. The new collared, armored look was in across the board, along with a new mandate that greatly affected Superman--no trunks.

The New 52 version of Superman was eventually replaced entirely with the much-favored Pre-Flashpoint version and his costume was altered to reflect his previous hopeful attitude while also staying in the updated rules of the new universe. The costume has since reverted to the Pre-Flashpoint version as well, but this suit remains one of the best redesigns of the Rebirth era.

3 BATMAN

Batman was another character whose dark trunks were removed in an attempt to modernize DC's line of characters, as they symbolized the Golden Age design styles that some felt were dating the characters. Batman's New 52 look went fully tactical and removed any ounce of color from the character, which made sense but looked a little drab.

Capullo's redesign for the Rebirth era fixed those issues by removing the New 52's line-wide armor lining and highlighting his iconic symbol in yellow as an homage to the logo's previous yellow oval design. The sleek new cape was fitted around the shoulders with an inner faded purple lining that brought out the formerly drab grays, though it too has returned to the Pre-Flashpoint design.

2 WALLY WEST/FLASH

Wally West's redesign as Flash doesn't actually alter his New 52 costume, as he was one of the biggest casualties of the rebooted timeline. His absence from the new DC universe was one of the reasons for the Rebirth soft fix, and when Wally returned he quickly created a new costume for himself to separate him from Barry Allen's Flash and the New 52's Kid Flash, Wallace West.

Wally's new costume (created out of pure Speed Force which was an ability first discovered by Wally) merged the designs of the first Kid Flash costume with his Pre-Flashpoint Flash costume that was based on Barry's earlier Flash costume. The Rebirth Wally costume fits the character well, though it also marks a dark turn in Flash that has tainted the suit a bit recently.

1 DEATHSTROKE

Slade Wilson has been rising in popularity for years as one of the DC Universe's most dangerous characters, and he received a big redesign and new push from the New 52 reboot. Unfortunately, the character's origins as an athletic mercenary were covered up by heavy armor that took Deathstroke's nickname of the Terminator way too seriously.

The Rebirth redesign gave Deathstroke's costume a slimmed-down look with a new tactical armor that fit the character much better. Deathstroke now looks like he could actually use the enhanced reflexes and agility that make him such a threat to the rest of the DC universe instead of being weighed down by unnecessary armor embellishments.
