Each year when Diamond Distributor's Free Comic Book Day event rolls around, fans and industry watchers alike look for the planned releases from publishers to see how company's will serve the dual masters of new fan recruitment and die hard reader promotion. This year DC Comics has at least one book on the slate that's aiming for both: A "Green Lantern/Flashpoint" combo series just announced on the publisher's The Source blog.

Powered by two Geoff Johns stories, the May 7 release features a reprint of "Green Lantern" #30 which as drawn by Ivan Reis presents the chapter in the "Secret Origin" arc where Hal Jordan receives the ring of power. Along with that story, an advanced preview of Johns and Andy Kubert's summer event "Flashpoint" will round out the package.

In the past, DC and Marvel Comics both have released multiple one-shots, generally one directed towards already dedicated comic buyers and one kid-friendly release. The latter releases fall into FCBD's "Silver" category which revealed that DC's kid release will be a "Young Justice/Batman Brave & The Bold" super sampler while Marvel's will be a "Captain America & Thor: The Mighty Avengers" issue by Roger Langrige and Chris Samnee. Other Silver releases include Archie's "Sonic The Hedgehog," Oni Press' "Spontaneous" #1 and Drawn & Quarterly's "John Stanley's Summer Fun."

DC's "Green Lantern/Flashpoint" comic is the last release revealed at the "Gold" level, meaning every comic shop participating in the promotion will get copies. Other Gold offerings include Marvel's "Amazing Spider-Man: Way of the Spider" comic, IDW's "Locke & Key" and Archaia's "Mouse Guard/The Dark Crystal" flipbook.
