In the DC universe, there is no higher standing for a superhero than to be a member of the Justice League. Yes, there are other great teams out there like the Justice Society and the Teen Titans, but the Justice League is where the best of the best all end up. Unless the Justice League is headquartered in Detroit, then the team isn't very good at all.

The Justice League is best known for having the seven core DC heroes as members, but over the years, just about every major DC character, and more than a few B, C, and D-list heroes, have been on the team. From Superman to G'nort the Green Lantern, it's hard to think of many heroes who haven't been Leaguers at some point, but they're out there. Here are ten powerful DC heroes who were surprisingly never members of the Justice League...

10 Mister Terrific

Michael Holt as Mister Terrific

The third smartest man alive, Mister Terrific has been a longstanding member of the Justice Society and has fought alongside the Justice League on a number of occasions, but he has never been an official member of the team.

With his superior intellect and scientific skills, this hero could easily replace Batman in many respects, but Mister Terrific has never shown much interest in being a detective, and now that he is busy with The Terrifics these days, the chances of him joining the League seems like a long shot.

9 Raven

Raven ready to fight

Best known for being a member of the Teen Titans, Raven is one of the most powerful magic users in the DC universe, thanks in part to her less than ideal bloodline. The daughter of the demon Trigon, Raven did try to join the Justice League but was rejected, leading to her becoming a member of the Titans.

When she was younger and had trouble controlling her powers, it made sense that the Justice League would turn her down, but now that she is in her twenties and appears to have learned to control her abilities, it seems like it will only be a matter of time before Raven gets called up to the League.

8 Mary Marvel

Part of the Shazam Family, Mary Marvel, who appears to just go by Mary these days, is something of an almost member of the Justice League. While Shazam himself has been a member of the Super Buddies, a team made up of former Justice League members from the UN days, including Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Captain Atom, and Elongated Man.

Mary did join the Justice Society for a time, but now that she and the rest of the Shazam Family are appearing in the DC universe again, it may be time for her to make her mark as a member of the Justice League. Shazam has had his time on the team; now it's time for another member of the family to join.

7 Sodam Yat

Sodam Yat as Ion Green Lantern

Imagine Superman with a Green Lantern ring, and that would give you an idea of who Sodam Yat is when it comes to his power level. A Daxamite, Sodam Yat has every power Superman has, but he can only use them one at a time. As anyone who has battled a Daxamite can tell you, that doesn't make them any less dangerous in a fight, and adding a Power Ring to the mix made Sodam even more worthy of a spot on the Justice League.

Of course, his Green Lantern Corps responsibilities would make that difficult. While there have been plenty of Green Lanterns on the Justice League, they have always been stationed in Space Sector 2814, where Earth is. Sodam Yat is stationed in Space Sector 1760.

6 Green Lantern Alan Scott

He may be a Green Lantern, but he isn't like the others. Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern in DC Comics and isn't a part of the Green Lantern Corps. His ring is powered by the Starheart, a magical force that became sentient after the Guardians trapped it inside a star.

Alan Scott is one of the oldest comic book characters still running around and is a founding member of the Justice Society, and while he has fought alongside the Justice League countless times, he has never been asked to join the team, and chances are he would decline the offer if it was made.

5 Uncle Sam

With one of the wilder origins, Uncle Sam was created when the Founding Fathers performed a mystical ritual and conjured the American Spirit into an artifact they named the American Talisman. Now, whenever America is in need of a hero, the Talisman binds itself to a patriotic American and the two become Uncle Sam.

Uncle Sam is the leader of the Freedom Fighters and was originally a Quality Comics character before being bought by DC. When he was first introduced into DC, Uncle Sam and his team lived on Earth-X, a universe where the Nazis won World War II.

4 Negative Man

Negative Man flies and punches in DC Comics.

When test pilot Larry Trainor took the experimental K-2F space plane too high into the atmosphere, he was bombarded by cosmic radiation that turned his skin transparent and made him radioactive. Soon after, Larry learned that he now shared his body with a being called Negative Man. As Negative Man, Larry joined the Doom Patrol.

Like his other Doom Patrol teammates, Negative Man tends to try and keep out of the big superhero stuff but will show up when needed. He and the team rarely come into contact with the Justice League or other superteams, and chances are that if Negative Man as offered a place on the League, he would turn it down.

3 Yz

Johnny Thunder standing in front of a background of DC Comics

A magical djinn who has been the partner of Johnny Thunder and Jakeem Williams, Yz, more commonly known as Thunderbolt or Cei-U, can do anything his partner wishes, meaning that he is basically all-powerful. Yz hails from the 5th Dimension, home of two other notable DC characters, Mister Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite.

Yz has long been a member of the Justice Society mainly because that is the team his two partners have been on, but if Jakeem should ever try out for the Justice League or be offered a spot on the team, Yz would go with him.

2 Spectre

While it isn't often thought of as being a team player, the Spectre was a founding member of the Justice Society and has worked alongside the heroes of the DC universe on multiple occasions.

The physical embodiment of the vengeance of God, Spectre is one of the most powerful beings in the universe and would be a big addition to the Justice League, but this Ghostly Guardian is known for having a short temper and a love for torture, which suggests that it wouldn't get along with the likes of Flash or Wonder Woman.

1 Highfather

Kirby Quiz Highfather

While other members of the New Gods have joined the Justice League, most notably Mister Miracle and Orion, Highfather has never been a member. The leader of the New Gods, Highfather may have too much on his plate to hang out at the Hall of Justice and wait for Superman or Batman to call a team meeting.

While Highfather was able to bring the war between New Genesis and Apokolips to a truce, he knows that Darkseid could break the pact at any time and restart the war. So it is that Highfather stays vigilant, only intervening when there is no other choice.
