WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Far Sector #4 by N.K. Jemisin, Jamal Campbell, and Deron Bennett, on sale now

There have been nearly countless Green Lanterns across the history of the DC Universe. Each of them brings their own perspective and strengths to the Green Lantern Corps, but they're all usually defined by their Power Rings, which all possess the same set of powers. But it turns out that one of the newest Lanterns actually stands out from the rest of the Corps with a very unique ring.

Far Sector's Sojourner "Jo" Mullein has a very unique Green Lantern ring that doesn't require a Power Battery -- but comes with an unfortunate time limit for use.

THE POWER RING

The Green Lantern Power Ring is among the most powerful weapons in the DC Universe, being fueled by the will and imagination of whoever can control it. Depending on the inner willpower of the user, a properly trained and motivated Green Lantern has the ability to create almost anything. Typically, the Power Rings are created by the Green Lantern Corps and sent out across the galaxy with the help of Mogo.

They require a recharge once their reserves have been spent, usually through a Power Battery connected to the Central Power Battery located on Oa. The color yellow has also proven to be difficult to utilize the ring against, thanks to the yellow impurity connected to the fear entity Parallax. Although every ring will be used by the different welders in various different ways, they typically come with the same powers and limitations. However, it appears that the newest Green Lantern has a very specific ring that comes with unique perks and weaknesses.

JO'S RING

After the City Enduring Peace Division opened fire on protestors, Jo confronts the assembled police. Enraged, Jo showcases her power by casually destroying tanks with single blasts. The apparent leader of the Peace Division speaks to his agent who confronted Jo after she departs to save more lives, and reveals that he's found distinct differences in Jo's Green Lantern operates compared to other Power Rings. It turns out that her ring actually self-charges whenever it's not in active use, a perpetually charging device. He suspects that Jo's ring doesn't even actually require a Power Battery as a result, making it unique in the universe. This gives her strength in specific times of crisis, as her ring seems completely derived from another source. He also believes that Jo's ring might be weaker than other Power Rings, but having a naturally recharging ring gives her a distinct advantage in battles.

This means that her ring requires time to recharge after a period of exertion, preventing her from ever throwing everything into a single blast and then using her battery for a quick recharge. This proves to be the case when Jo checks her ring after bringing peace back to the City Enduring and railing on the City Council for letting the violence get os out of hand in the first place. Her ring has been reduced to 8 percent battery, which means it'll be five days before it can recharge to full power.

When she's alone, Jo thinks to herself about her ring and another weakness it has that no one else seems to suspect: her ring has an apparent time limit to how long it will be effective. Jo remembers receiving the ring and being told that she would have one year to make a difference in the universe. Jo has already been on the City Enduring for months, meaning she might already be running her window to use the ring is closing. With things only getting more and more complicated in the City Enduring, it might take everything Jo and this unique Green Lantern ring have to bring peace to the alien world.
