Jason Todd had a troubled history even before he first put on Robin's pixie boots, and since his infamous death in the "Death in the Family" storyline, he has been the defining example of what can happen to the superhero youths of the DC Universe.

However, even death couldn't stop Jason Todd, and he returned to take on the role of Red Hood, the first criminal identity of the man who murdered him, the Joker. Since his return, he has continued to prove he is the most savage member of the Batman family, which we will explore further today.

10 STOLE THE BATMOBILES TIRES

While Jason's Pre-Crisis introduction was basically just a retelling of Dick Grayson's origins, Todd was given a gritter beginning after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Now the street-tough kid was first introduced to the Batman in the act of a crime, which now distanced the character from Dick instead of mirroring the first Robin.

Jason Todd is caught by Batman as he is attempting to steal the tires from the Batmobile. Not only did this impress Batman because the kid was clearly ballsy, but he was also able to bypass the Batmobile's security system in order to take off the wheels, which further inspired Batman to make the fateful decision to take Todd under his wing.

9 THREW A SERIAL ABUSER OFF A BUILDING

Unfortunately, Todd's exploits as Robin soon began to take a dark turn, and it was revealed early on that he wasn't as dedicated to the rules against killing as Batman. Robin had issues with his use of extreme force while on missions before, but this was further tested when a serial abuser was set free due to diplomatic immunity.

After Robin crashed Felipe Garzonas' assault on one of his victims, Felipe was released due to his father's connections. Batman and Robin attempted to get him exported through other means, but he was still responsible for the suicide of his latest victim. Jason took the matter into his own hands, and either pushed Felipe or caused him to trip to his death the night before he was deported.

8 CLAWED HIS WAY BACK TO LIFE

Jason Todd's in-comic rebirth was given a little helping hand due to the multiversal manipulations of Superboy-Prime as revealed in Infinite Crisis, but his actual return showcased Todd's grit and determination, even as a recently resurrected corpse.

Not only did Jason Todd beat his way out of his coffin and walk for miles before falling into a coma due to the injuries inflicted by the Joker, but he also survived bathing in a Lazarus Pit with Ra's al Ghul, which restored him fully. There is some thought that his time in the pit with  Ra's might have altered his personality, but any of the events following his resurrection were sure to play a part in his new world view.

7 WORKED WITH HUSH

Dr. Thomas Elliot became the villain known as Hush in his plot to take out his revenge on Bruce Wayne/Batman by breaking him both physically and mentally. he was aided in this scheme by Edward Nygma/Riddler, and as revealed later, Jason Todd.

While Todd was used in the scheme to mess with Batman's mind, that version was revealed to be Clayface. However, Todd revealed the details of his death to Hush and even played the role of himself briefly before being replaced by Clayface, as he wasn't ready to reveal himself fully to Batman yet.

6 WENT TO WAR WITH BLACK MASK

When Red Hood first appeared on the scene, he had assembled a few gang leaders and forced them to work for him. He did this by showing them a duffel bag filled with the heads of their lieutenants. Red Hood became a crime boss and set his sights on the current leader of Gotham's underworld, Black Mask.

Todd's plan was to take down Gotham's criminal element from the inside, with extreme violence. Red Hood's actions brought him into conflict with Batman, and his true identity was revealed to his former mentor. Jason Todd's initial time as the Red Hood was a dark period, as evidenced by his extreme methods in his war on crime.

5 GAVE TIM DRAKE A BEATDOWN

Jason was working through more than just his issues with Batman after his return, and he harbored some hostility towards the other Robin who had followed in his footsteps. Tim Drake was the third Robin, and unlike Todd, he had earned the title due to his own detective skills and dedicated training.

Todd was driven to prove he was still the best Robin, so he wore a modified version of his old costume and attacked Tim Drake at Titans Tower after taking out the rest of the Teen Titans. The two fought, with Todd beating Drake severely to prove his point.

4 KILLED ANOTHER EARTH'S JOKER

Jason Todd took a brief detour into heroism during the Countdown weekly series that led to the Final Crisis event. Along with Donna Troy and Kyle Rayner/Green Lantern, Jason Todd was sent by a Monitor to search for Ray Palmer/Atom across the Multiverse.

During their search, Jason met the Batman of Earth 51, who had grown hardened and murderous after the death of his Jason Todd. Todd was given the Red Robin costume that was made for his Earth 51 counterpart but Batman was killed shortly after by a team of multiversal characters that included a Joker. Todd crushed Joker's head with a rock after he found him laughing over Batman's body.

3 BECAME A GUN-TOTING BATMAN

Following the death of Bruce Wayne during Final Crisis, Gotham City was left without a protector. A Battle for the Cowl broke out as a few contenders for the role appeared, including Harvey Dent/Two-Face and Tim Drake, though Tim only assumed the identity because Dick Grayson refused.

Drake was forced into action due to a new armored Batman who was using guns and killing criminals and was eventually revealed to be Jason Todd. Todd even attempted to kill Tim Drake again, though a final fight with Nightwing left the cowl in the proper hands as Dick Grayson assumed the mantle of the Batman with Damian Wayne at his side as the Robin.

2 BECAME DICK'S ARCH ENEMY

DC's Red Hood and Scarlett

This didn't sit very well with Jason Todd, who was still at his most villainous and further angered by Dick and Damian's new role as Batman and Robin. He then vowed to become Dick's greatest enemy and became a new version of the Red Hood that was more in line with the Joker's former namesake.

He also manipulated an already abused girl named Scarlet who had been partially turned into one of Professor Pyg's Dollotron's to become his partner in a dark parody of the dynamic duo. Scarlet's relationship with Todd was problematic but grew to resemble a teacher-mentor relationship, though her final fate before Flashpoint was left ambiguous.

1 POISONED A PRISON CAFETERIA

Following Todd's villainous (and very public) role as Batman's arch-enemy during Dick Grayson's time as the Dark Knight, he was incarcerated in Arkham Asylum. After Bruce Wayne returned, Todd informed him he couldn't be kept in Arkham anymore, and soon he was transferred to a regular Gotham prison.

There a number of top mob leaders started dying off as a number of criminals tried to take revenge on Todd due to his time as a crime boss. Todd stayed true to his brutal methods of dealing with criminals by poisoning the prison cafeteria food, killing over 80 inmates before escaping in a violent prison truck explosion.
