Tom King has described his upcoming DC Black Label take on The Human Target as a story combining pulp vibes with transcendental musing, with some Justice League mixed in."The Human Target is a transcendently beautiful series about a man learning to live just in time to die," King wrote on Twitter, explaining that DC asked him for a blurb to tease the series. "It's about being alone and being in love; it's about knowing just where you're going and having no idea where you are. It's a grimy sexy pulp romance Justice League book, and it's comics' next true obsession."RELATED: DC's Hill House Comics Returns With Refrigerator Full of Heads

King's description of the book was included in a series of tweets on the DC Nation Twitter account promoting The Human Target's November release. Series artist Greg Smallwood also chimed in, calling the work "a visual juxtaposition that is rife with possibilities."

King and Smallwood's version of The Human Target will run for 12 issues and star Christopher Chance, the man nicknamed the "Human Target" for his unusual occupation of protecting high-profile clients from assassination attempts by disguising himself as them. Over the course of the series, Chance will deal with the fallout of his own murder -- an uncanny event that occurs after he is hired to protect Lex Luthor. Previews of the book also hint that Chance will cross paths with members of the Justice League International, including Batman, Black Canady, Martian Manhunter and Mister Miracle.

Chance has regularly grappled with the consequences of his unorthodox profession in the past, becoming addicted to the life of his clients and often wondering where his own personality ends and his client's persona begins. King's description indicates the new Black Label series will continue this trend, which was developed in Chance's various Vertigo series written by Peter Milligan, beginning in 1999 and ending in 2005 with art by Edvin Biuković, Javier Pulido and Cliff Chiang.

The Human Target debuted in 1972's Action Comics #419 in the story "The Assassin-Express Contract," written by Len Wein and illustrated by Carmine Infantino and Dick Giordano. He was a regular presence in backup tales in The Brave and the Bold during the '80s, and remained relatively obscure until Milligan revived him for his first Vertigo miniseries.

Aside from his comic book appearances, Christopher Chance has also popped up on the small screen on multiple occasions. ABC produced a short-lived Human Target series in 1992, while Fox made their own version in 2010.
