DC Comics' Human Target is returning for a new Black Label title from writer Tom King and artist Greg Smallwood.

After previously teasing an announcement, King revealed on Twitter that he had partnered with Smallwood for The Human Target, a new title set to be published under DC's adult-oriented Black Label. "This Fall," King wrote. "Christopher Chance, The Human Target, wants to make something of it." The cover artwork sees Chance adjusting his suit as numerous members of the Justice League -- including Batman and Green Lantern -- take aim.

The original Human Target, Fred Venable, was created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, and first appeared in 1953's Detective Comics #201. However, the second Human Target, Christopher Chance, was created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino, and first appeared in 1972's Action Comics #419. Chance is a private investigator/bodyguard who assumes the identities of his clients -- mainly clients who have been targeted for assassination.

Christopher Chance has actually headlined not one, but two Human Target television shows. The first starred Rick Springfield and aired for a single seven-episode season on ABC in 1992. Meanwhile, the second starred Mark Valley and ran for 25 episodes across two seasons, airing on Fox from 2010 to 2011. Actor Wil Traval later brought Chance to the Arrowverse, playing the Human Target in two episodes of The CW's Arrow between 2016 and 2018.

This new comic from King and Smallwood isn't the first time Christopher Chance has been revived by DC Comics after a period of inactivity. Back in 1999, Peter Milligan and Edvin Biukovic brought the character back and reinvented him for DC's now-defunct Vertigo Comics imprint (which was effectively replaced by the Black Label). Vertigo's Human Target originally ran as a four-issue limited series. It was followed up by the original graphic novel Human Target: Final Cut, which was itself followed up by another Vertigo Human Target series, which ran for 21 issues.
