Horror movie hero and cult icon Bruce Campbell can do it all. Now, Campbell is making his DC debut as a writer with a six-issue miniseries under the DC Horror banner. DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 reimagines world history, as nazi Germany uses nefarious means to supplement their army, and the only ones who can stop this undead apocalypse are Sgt. Rock and his rootin' tootin' band of men, the Easy Company. With artwork from Eduardo Risso, colors by Kristian Rossi, and letters from Rob Leigh, something dark and special brews at the heart of the DC universe.

Set in the closing moments of the Second World War, DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 paints the nazis into a corner as forces from both east and west surround Germany. Infuriated, the Führer makes a drastic decision to enact the Regeneration Plan, which will provide the Germans with an undead workforce. But when the US army encounters a few of these new soldiers, the picture becomes quite clear. Intelligence sends word to Easy Company about the unholy experiments the nazis are engaging in. Sgt. Rock has his next target: the military installation responsible for the zombie hordes.

DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1 Fuhrer

Bruce Campbell, who is not entirely new to the comic book medium, taps into his Ash Williams energy to set the ball rolling with a string of shocking opening pages. DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 opens ominously, showing glimpses of the unsleeping, untired, and undead foe stampeding towards enemy lines. The audience immediately catches on to the creepy tone emanating from all corners of the book. But gradually, that feeling subsides as exposition becomes the watchword for the rest of the issue. Long briefings set the stage for the story and establish a harsh militant tone. Interpersonal exchanges are sparse, but Campbell bottles all the necessary information into one issue to clear a path for the action-packed series.

Artist Eduardo Risso and colorist Kristian Rossi's unique styles blossom in the horror of the paranormal and the terror of the unknown. On paper, the linework may look minimalistic, but the heavy inks cast a long shadow over the characters, bringing out their sinister and inquisitive qualities. Risso designs each panel to establish a sense of anticipation and dread. Rossi's muted palette matches the eerie visuals with the tense storyline, bridging the two. Instead of applying colors to each object, Rossi gives each page a particular tone to match the mood.

DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1 Zombies

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 is a slow-burner that ends with the team encountering their first taste of zombie aggression. Campbell's return to the horror scene is good news for comic book fans as DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 has all the makings of a great title.
