The DCU has gone through a huge transition with Peter Safran and James Gunn in charge. On the one hand, there have been some heavy losses, such as the departure of Henry Cavill as Superman, but there have also been some gains as well, such as a larger connectivity in continuity and a fresh start for most of the canon. Thankfully, some of the established shows won't be leaving, and hit shows like Peacemaker will continue and be integrated into the new continuity. But Peacemaker could also be the perfect proof of concept for another violent vigilante to enter the new world of the DCU -- Hitman.

Tommy Monaghan, aka Hitman, was introduced in The Demon Annual #2 (by Garth Ennis, John McCrea, Gene D'Angelo and Steve Haynie) and was a telepathic hitman that operated in Gotham City. His main focus was killing metahumans, but he would never kill a good person. As a result, he gained favor with many of DC's heroes, even Superman, regardless of his profession. Being a unique kind of anti-hero, Hitman would be the perfect template to push the DCU's growing narrative in a way that Peacemaker can't. Where Peacemaker can touch on the strange corners of the DC Universe, Hitman could take on more familiar threats in Gotham City.

Hitman Could Explore Gotham City's Dangers

Tommy Monaghan's exploits have always taken place largely in Gotham City, where he occasionally runs into Batman. The scope of the city was a huge aspect of the story as it showed how much Batman couldn't do as he could only be in so many places in one night. When it came to the criminal underworld, however, Hitman was there quelling any parts a metahuman may play in trying to run crime. He also took on corrupt CIA agents who wanted to use Gotham as ground zero for a war against metahumans. A Hitman series could adapt many of these concepts and show how deep the rabbit hole of conspiracy could go.

Most importantly, Hitman would establish a personality akin to Gotham City and how it's a character on its own as Batman may be there to protect as much of it as possible, but there's still an underbelly where the criminal element thrives. These small corners are where Hitman could come into play and show that Gotham has its own brand of violent justice to do what Batman or even Red Hood could never do. Plus, by showing how dark Gotham can be, it sets the stage for the juxtaposition of Metropolis when the next Superman movie comes out.

Hitman Is a Chance To Explore More Characters

A Hitman series is a great way to expand on the lore and mystery surrounding Gotham City. But aside from expanding on the criminal element that's inherently present, Monaghan's code for killing metahumans may also have him clash with some of the city's deadliest criminals. With characters like Clayface and Killer Croc likely too outlandish for a new Batman to face, they could be introduced as Hitman's targets. Additionally, showing these enemies could also mean Easter eggs for other enemies like The Joker or Two-Face.

Peacemaker has shown that DC can work in live action even when adapting characters that few are aware of. The key has always been a powerful story with unique and entertaining characters. In the case of Hitman, Tommy Monaghan may be crass, but his humor is perfect for today's audience, and his actions perfectly oppose the colors and flash of traditional superheroes. As a result, he's the perfect answer to a show like Peacemaker and whichever direction the new DCU will go.
