The following contains spoilers for "Across the Multiverse" from DC's Harley Quinn Romances, on sale now from DC Comics.

While all couples who inhabit the DC Universe have their own stories to tell, there are only so many who could be considered genuine power couples. Batman and Catwoman certainly stand out in that regard, as do Big Barda and Mister Miracle, yet one superpowered romance stands out above all others, and for good reason. Apollo and Midnighter aren't just one of DC's most endearing couples, they are one of the most enduring as well, and they have just proved why in a truly explosive way.

With Midnighter caught in the clutches of his alien enemies, he can only watch as his beloved Apollo battles against foes both real and imagined. As seen in the story "Across the Multiverse" (by Greg Lockard, Giulio Macaione, Fabs Nocera, and Ariana Maher) from DC's Harley Quinn Romances, it doesn't take long for Apollo to escape the simulation he has been trapped in, nor for him to make quick work of the villains who put him there. This isn't all that surprising considering they chose to come after not just Apollo, but his husband, too, especially when both of them have proven how far they are willing to go for one another.

Since their first appearance in 1998's StormWatch #4 (by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch), Midnighter and Apollo have been synonymous with the titular team, and even more so their successors the Authority. As near-unstoppable analogues of Batman and Superman, Midnighter and Apollo have always offered their own unique brand of justice to whatever world they inhabit. In spite of their unflinching and brutal heroics, the thing that has made them icons is the fact that they still found love against all odds.

Though Apollo and Midnighter were only ever teammates during their StormWatch days, their feelings for one another became apparent soon after joining Jenny Sparks' Authority. Between the horrors they had already lived through and an extended stint on another superhero team, there was plenty of time for their relationship to shift from partners on the battlefield to partners in life. Before long, the couple was effectively known as the face of the Wildstorm Universe. Of course, that all changed when the New 52 folded the couples' native reality into the wider DC Universe, although nothing could change how they felt.

From one universe to another and through countless blood-soaked battles, nothing has been able to keep Apollo and Midnighter apart for any meaningful amount of time, nor has anything managed to drive a wedge between them. If anything, all the struggles they have faced have brought them together in ways they never would have been otherwise. This on top of their innate understanding of one another as people, heroes, and lab-grown super soldiers all lends to them being what might be the most loving couple in the DC Universe, if not comics in general.

Though it may seem like the romance between Midnighter and Apollo is simply a long-running storyline that helps tie the two of them together beyond being on the same team, it also imparts a greater sense of meaning in their world. This isn't necessarily true in the DC Universe, however, their WildStorm beginnings were much more bleak than anything they have to contend with today. Still, the fact that their relationship has endured so much is at least a beacon of hope for any comic book couple.
