The comic book community has been mourning the passing of influential writer and editor Dennis "Denny" O'Neil, who co-created and redefined a whole host of iconic characters for both DC and Marvel Comics.

In tribute to O'Neil's legacy, DC has made Green Lantern #76, the first issue of O'Neil and collaborator Neal Adams' groundbreaking run on the title, free for a limited time on DC's digital comics platform, Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble, Google Play and iBooks. The issue will be available to download for free through Tuesday, June 23.

Published in 1970, Green Lantern #76 redefined Hal Jordan and Green Arrow/Oliver Queen's partnership, as the two heroes went on a cross-country trip, with Hal's conservative stance countered by Ollie's outspoken liberal and socially conscious outlook.

The run would explore many topics that were largely taboo in mainstream comics at the time, as the duo confronted racism, drug addiction and other ongoing social issues through the prism of the two superheroes' partnership and conflicting views. The run was published in Green Lantern/Green Arrow #76-87, with an additional follow-up in Issue #89, redefining the two characters and the possibilities of the medium for decades to follow.
