Justice League has as many enemies as any crime-fighting league of heroes would. The core of the group consists of seven superheroes: Green Lantern, The Flash, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. Whilst some of the members may have changed on the canonical timeline of Justice League (such Cyborg for Martian Manhunter), it is and will always be greater than the sum of its parts.

Over the course of its career, first appearing in The Brave And The Bold #28 (1960), Justice League has fought many formidable enemies. Enemies that otherwise would be hard for a single member to tackle by herself/himself. The League has fought numerous enemies in many of its incarnations, sometimes bending but never breaking. The A-team of crusaders in The Watchtower is and always will be a forbearer of justice, here are ten of its most formidable enemies.

10 THE INJUSTICE LEAGUE

Formed by Agamemno during The Silver Age, the Injustice League is exactly what the name spells out, villainous counterparts to the league. The Injustice League began as Major Disaster led and Maxwell Lord deputed a bunch of hoodlums in Antarctica.

Much like the League, the Injustice League has undergone many incarnations since its Antarctican exile. After the exile, heavyweights such as Lex Luthor, Cheetah, and the Joker joined it, working endlessly at defeating the League and to rule the world.

While the League stands together, the Injustice League of course doesn't know what teamwork is, hence making it easier for the League to take it down from time and time again.

9 LEX LUTHOR

The Justice League has been the greatest threat to Lex Luthor and vice versa. At the heart of Lex's mind lays a deep-seated lust for owning and controlling the Metropolis, and not philanthropy. His lust for power eventually conflicts with Superman, to whom Metropolis was a home and not en empire to lead.

One by one, as Lex Luthor's devious plans, failed,  after his fall he rounded up all the supervillains to defeat the Justice League. Sometimes teaming up with supersoldier Amazo, sometimes hacking into the Watchtower, sometimes joining Gorilla Grodd's army, Lex Luthor knows no bounds.

8 DESPERO

Having undergone as many transformations as the League itself, Despero, the intergalactic tyrant will not budge. The tyrant started out as a frail man, with little to no ability besides mind control. His hatred of the Justice League, however, pushed his limits till he became a powerhouse to be reckoned with. It isn't a figure of speech when records say Despero survived death and regenerated himself just to fight the League again.

Despero's uses his third-eye and telekinesis to read and control minds. So far, he hasn't succeeded in taking down the League, but what's a UN Flag-wrapping-tyrant gotta do? Keep trying.

7 DOCTOR LIGHT

One of those sad little men who won't give up, no matter what the repercussions. Arthur Light's hatred for Justice League knows no bounds. Not only did he fight the Justice League and lost, but he also fought their sidekicks Teen Titans. Talk about commitment!

Light takes a place in the list because he found the evil sidekicks, the Fearsome Five to defeat the Teen Titans. After losing badly, Doctor Arthur Light was kicked out of the organization that he formed. His first streak of madness was when he tried to murder Superman with sorcery! Arthur Light is an epitome of lost and found, the never-give-up guy whose application to the Suicide Squad for rejected.

6 STARRO- THE CONQUEROR

The original League villain was Starro, thanks to the retcon of DC origin, people keep forgetting this. This gigantic starfish may look harmless at first but it has the hypnosis ability by creating drone-like versions of itself to latch onto people.

In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Starro made his appearance in "Revenge of the Reach", aided by his agent, The Faceless Hunger, who bombarded the Dinosaur Island with Starro clones. He possessed control over almost every superhero at one point, with the exceptions of a few. Starro was defeated in this memorable war by Captain Marvel by summoning light powers.

5 AMAZO

Introduced first in Batman, The Brave and the Bold #30, Amazo, an advanced cybernetic Android who can absorb the power of superhumans. An old foe who has reemerged time and again, Amazo was Professor Ivo's creation and sidekick. Ivo the mad scientist, an enemy to the Justice League, tried to achieve immortality through Amazo.

Amazo appeared again in Justice League (2001-2004) in a different incarnation but with the same ability to duplicate his enemies' powers into one. Amazo has always been League's dangerous villain, who possess an unstoppable potential.

4 THE CRIME SYNDICATE

If one ever lived in a morally bankrupt world, the Crime Syndicate would be their version of Justice League. In an alternate Earth-3, the evil-counterparts of the Justice League exist. Their founder, The Outsider (a destitute Alfred Pennyworth of Earth-3), created them by opening Pandora's Box.

Earth-3 was essentially a birthplace of evil, where Atomica, Deathstorm, Grid, Johnny Quick, Owlman, Power Ring, Sea King, Superwoman, Ultraman reigned supreme. Known as the Crime Syndicate, for League, fighting them means fighting their morally-corrupt versions, so that requires a lot of strategic thinking on each one's part.

3 VANDAL SAVAGE

Vandal Savage, an Immortal warrior has only one goal: to conquer the planet. Vandal Savage first appeared in Green Lantern #10, without any superpowers, albeit with patience and resilience. His determination makes him a stand-out nemesis to the Justice League.

The chilling thing about Vandal Savage is that he wears a Swastika armband. Vandal Savage possesses immortality, hence he is a storehouse of knowledge, wealth and strategic information. He has struck at the League again and again on account of his wealth and resources, proving a headache each time.

2 FELIX FAUST

What do you call a sorcerer who makes a deal with the devil himself? Felix Faust. This enemy to the Justice League possesses mystical knowledge that he uses to strike at it, again and again. An old foe to the League, he first appeared in  Justice League of America #10 (1962)

Felix Faust has been a member of the Injustice League, Secret Society of Super-Villains, the Crime Champions. He targets Justice League to manipulate them into summoning a trio of ancient demons that can boost his sorcery.

1 DARKSEID

The ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid isn't a so much a supervillain as he is a god. He embodies and personifies hatred, tyranny and demands submission from his subjects. Darkseid has one mission in life: to gain the Anti-Life Equation, with which he can control all of the universes.

Darkseid made his first appearance in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134, he possesses as much raw power as Superman does. The Justice League many times struck with Darkseid, most memorable of which is JLA: Rock of Ages, The Darkseid War, somehow managing to keep him at Bay each time.
