Announced in 2016, Gotham City Sirens was poised to reunite Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie with her Suicide Squad director David Ayer. However, after changes inside Warner Bros. Gotham City Sirens -- which traditionally consists of Harley, Poison Ivy and Catwoman -- was replaced with a Birds of Prey film -- which we learned would consist of Harley, Black Canary and Huntress.

Warner Bros. is going in a different direction with Suicide Squad, bringing in James Gunn as writer and director of The Suicide Squad, which while not a direct sequel, will bring back familiar characters like Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg and Captain Boomerang.

The next film to hit theaters from what's referred to as the DC Extended Universe is Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), followed by Wonder Woman 1984. Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2020.
