Though DC Future State is looking at the future of its heroes, it will bring back a character from the Fourth World.
Superman group editor Janie S. Rich revealed that Shilo Norman, the second man to take up the mantle of Mister Miracle, will feature heavily in the Superman and Justice League books in Future State's lineup. "We are sort of looking at them as a core to our cosmic titles," Rich told IGN. "Everyone always loves to play with the New Gods... Shilo Norman has actually been off stage for a little while. I just loved Mister Miracle in general."
Rich said he had been wanting to return to Mister Miracle ever since working on the 2017 maxiseries with Tom King and Mitch Gerads. He also praised writer Brandon Easton for finding the perfect way to utilize Norman. "Brandon Easton had just this great take of giving the two sides of him, and as the escape artist, the ultimate escape is rising above your station and becoming this other figure, becoming who you want to be."
Shilo Norman debuted in Mister Miracle #15 in 1973 and was created by Jack Kirby. Norman was the ward of the original Mister Miracle Thaddeus Brown. When Thaddeus was murdered by the gangster known as Steel Hand, Norman brought him to justice. He would also work with the new Mister Miracle Scott Free and his wife, Big Barda. Scott would train Norman in the use of his escape technology, even giving him Fourth World technology including a Mother Box.
Norman's biggest role to date was in the Seven Soldiers' metaseries written by Grant Morrison, where he seemed to die in a battle against the Sheeda. However, he literally escaped death and broke out of his grave, reappearing in Morrison's Final Crisis miniseries.
Brandon Easton and Valentine De Landro will serve as the artistic team for the new Mister Miracle story. Easton's prior credits include Agent Carter and Transformers: War for Cybertron-Siege, while De Landro has illustrated Shadowman for Valiant and X-Factor for Marvel. Other Fourth World characters who make an appearance in Future State include the Black Racer, an avatar of Death who hunts down characters connected to the Speed Force.
DC Future State will last for two months, featuring the various heroes of the DC Universe in the far future. The Superman family of titles will feature Clark Kent as a gladiator on Warworld, while the Justice League titles will focus on other heroes.
DC Future State begins in January 2021 from DC.
