James Gunn has decided to move on from Henry Cavill as Superman in the DC Universe and fans aren't happy about it.Following DC's announcement that Cavill will not be donning the tights and cape for a new standalone Superman movie, many fans weren't shy to express their thoughts on the decision. Enthusiasts flocked to social media to voice their opinions as many lamented the Man of Steel star's exclusion from the role due to the new movie focusing on a younger Superman. Others have expressed their doubt regarding DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran's plan for the shared cinematic universe.RELATED: Peaky Blinders Creator Stephen Knight Penned a Treatment for Man of Steel 2

The announcement of Cavill's departure comes after the actor initially returned to play Superman in Black Adam. The superhero made a short cameo appearance in a post-credits scene during the film, which suggested that future projects would have Cavill carrying on in the role. The Justice League star even admitted that getting back into his suit was a "meaningful moment" for him and that he had been "doing everything he can to get back into it." However, having been given the opportunity to get back into the super suit, it appears the chance of another return has now disappeared.

The DCU's Future Remains Unknown

The decision to dispose of Cavill is just one in a long list of shake-ups from Gunn. The filmmaker has also opted to cancel plans to produce Wonder Woman 3 with the film "not fitting in" with what he has planned for the DCU in the future. That comes in spite of the fact that Patty Jenkins -- who was helming the movie as director -- recently submitted a treatment of the script. Jenkins has since had to set the record straight and revealed reports of her walking away from the film are "not true" and the decision came from DC Studios.

While the actual slate for the DCU is largely still unknown, Gunn has promised fans that they can expect more announcements in early 2023. He has also recently clarified that Robert Pattinson's Batman will remain in a separate universe from the mainline franchise and has fueled fans' hopes for a Green Arrow project.

Henry Cavill can be seen most recently in his role as Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes 2, which is available to stream via Netflix.
