After the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, countless possible futures came into existence and during the events known as Future State, over two dozen of these futures were immortalized in comic book series that cover the Superman family, the Bat-Family, and the Justice League.

From Yara Flor as Wonder Woman to Superman still surviving thousands of years into the future, the stories can be described as either invigorating or melancholic as worlds are born and destroyed over the centuries that could be. While the majority of the Future State comic books are well-done, some fall low in the ranking.

25 Future State: Legion of Super-Heroes #1-2

DC Future State Legion of Super-Heroes

The Legion of Super-Heroes has been disbanded but the band is getting back together to take down Element Lad, their former teammate who they believe committed genocide on the United Planets. A lot happens within the two issues (written by Brian Michael Bendis) but not at a satisfying pace.

24 Future State: House of El #1

House Of El Superman

One thousand years into the future, Superman’s descendants take their last stand against a common enemy as they fight for the House of El.

While the twist at the end wasn’t entirely unexpected, the climactic showdown at the end of the comic (written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson) was over way too quickly.

23 Future State: Batman/Superman #1-2

Superman Batman Future State

There are insidious side effects after people begin to use face-changing tech from Gotham City that has spread to Metropolis. Superman and Batman work together in this comic (written by Gene Luen Yang) to find out why this is happening and what exactly The Magistrate is up to. An interesting look at Superman in Gotham, the dynamic between the two superheroes seems off.

22 Future State: Green Lantern #1-2

Green Lantern Future State

The Green Lantern Corps. can no longer use their Power Rings but that doesn't stop John Stewart from leading a ragtag group of former Lanterns as they protect the Shaar from the brutal Khunds. In Geoffrey Thorne and Tom Raney's two issues, the action is suspenseful, but the art leaves much to be desired.

21 Future State: Nightwing #1-2

Nightwing perched on top of the Arkham Asylum sign

In Andrew Constant and Nicola Scott's Future State: Nightwing, Nightwing leads the resistance against The Magistrate and teams up with the next Batman when they try to take him down. This is the first time Dick Grayson has met the man who took on the mantle of Batman and while the two hold their own, the comics leave much to be desired.

20 Future State: Robin Eternal #1-2

Tim Drake fighitng

Meghan Fitzmartin, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira's Future State: Robin Eternal is about Tim Drake being the last of the Batfamily still fighting the Magistrate (as far as he knows anyway) and do everything he can to stop the Magistrate's new tech. The two comics incorporate ASL into the dialogue and the artwork is great, but the story comes off underwhelming.

19 Future State: Teen Titans #1-2

Teen Titans Future State Shazam Imprisons Raven

With Tim Sheridan, Rafa Sandoval, and Jordi Tarragona at the helm, Future State: Teen Titans is a series with far-reaching action and consequences that ties into Future State: The Flash and Future State: Shazam!

The apocalypse has happened and the Titans may be the only ones to make it right.

18 Future State: The Flash #1-2

The Flash Future State

Something has happened to DC's Speedsters after all of their powers have been taken away by none other than Wally West himself, who has gone on to murder the others. Barry still has hope that Wally can be rescued but the others aren't so sure. Though Brandon Vietti and Dale Eaglesham pull no punches in their series, the story comes out feeling average.

17 Future State: Shazam! #1-2

Future State Shazam Raven Billy Batson

While the Future State event series can be read in any order, Shazam! #1-2 by Tim Sheridan, Eduardo Pansica, and Julio Ferreira works well the earlier it's read as it's a tie-in to Future State: Teen Titans and the revelation of #2 is a real gut-punch for Billy Batson/Captain Marvel fans.

16 Future State: Gotham

Future State Jason Todd standing with a gun over his shoulders

Taking place sometime after Robin Eternal, the Batfamily has banded together in the fight against the Magistrate. Mostly. Jason Todd has become a Peacekeeper for the Magistrate and is believed to be a traitor, though there's more to the story than meets the eye.

Solemn yet sanguine, Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage's Kara Zor-El, Superwoman makes for an impressive series.

14 Future State: Harley Quinn #1-2

Jonathan Crane has gone straight and has recruited Harley Quinn to bring in bad guys for him and the Magistrate. Written by Stephanie Phillips and drawn by Simone Di Meo, the issues show Harley's untethered enthusiasm and her sharp mind as she uses her knowledge of psychiatry to anticipate what the next target will do.

Jen Bartel's Wonder Woman hovers as she holds her Lasso

After saving the multiverse in Dark Nights: Death Metal, Wonder Woman finds herself thousands of years into the future after Men have fallen and the Amazons of Themyscira's have inherited a dying Earth. Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and Jen Bartel's Immortal Wonder Woman shows a universe at the very End of Time as Wonder Woman holds out hope. Devastating and beautiful at the same time, the series shows an all-consuming end and, perhaps, a new beginning.

12 Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1-2

Superman screaming

With words and art by Sean Lewis and John Timms, this series puts Jonathan Kent's feet to the fire (so to speak) as he protects Metropolis as the new Superman. After making an impossible decision, Jon's ability to protect is questioned and he learns the hard way that he isn't his father.

11 Future State: Aquaman #1-2

Along with the breathtaking artwork, the series shows Andy growing from Aqualass to Aquawoman as she searches for her brother.

10 Future State: Superman: Worlds of War #1-2

Superman in chains

Superman has left Earth and he is revered in his hometown of Smallville as a god. One woman sees Clark Kent as the real hero with Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Mikel Janín skillfully illustrating who Superman really is as the panels alternate between an inspiring article he had written and him currently fighting for the freedom of others on a "Planet Hulk"-type world.

9 Future State: Catwoman #1-2

Catwoman crouching

Ram V and Otto Schmidt's western-inspired series has Catwoman rescuing people on a Magistrate train going to who-knows-where. It's been two years since Batman's "death" and Selina is still grieving him, doing everything she can to save the people of Gotham. With slick writing and impressive artwork, this series is a stand-out.

8 Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1-2

Future State Superman Wonder Woman feature

In Dan Watters and Leila del Duca's playful crossover of Jon Kent's Superman and Yara Flor's Wonder Woman as they help each other deal with their respective Sun problems and become great friends in the process. Fun and energizing, the two heroes make for a great team and a great read.
