DC's namesake Detective Comics is one of its longest running series, dating all the way back to the Golden Age of Comics. One notable early issue was Detective Comics #27, the debut of the character Batman, who would go on to be a pop culture juggernaut alongside many of his Golden Age contemporaries such as Superman and Wonder Woman.

One thousand issues later, DC is celebrating the Dark Knight's debut with an oversized issue that's nearly as big as a full length graphic novel. The cover for the trade dress has been revealed, as well as five variant covers created by noteworthy talent in the industry.

The main cover shown was made by Andy Kubert, with the variants being handled by Frank Quitely, Oliver Coipel, J. Scott Campbell, Lee Bermejo and one already revealed by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau. These five variants are the first half of DC's planned "Friends and Foes" set, showcasing Batman's allies. The second set of five will change the focus to his enemies.

Detective Comics #1027 will feature 12 stories by some of the biggest names in comics, which will hint at things to come in Gotham City and the DCU. Totaling 144 pages, the issue releases Sept. 9, and will retail for $9.99.
