DC's Multiverse is a total of 52 universes each varying in sometimes slightly, sometimes horrific ways from each other. It's basically a multiple-choice test where all answers have been checked at least once. The Dark Multiverse works in a similar fashion, but the only difference is that it consists of every nightmare ever imagined in any of the 52 separate universes.

The sentient beings in these universes exist only until someone on the real multiverse stops fearing them.

10 Inspired By The Discovery Of Dark Matter

Who says comic books and science don't interact well together? Apparently, not the creator of DC's Dark Knights: Metal. In fact, its creator Scott Snyder stated in an interview that it was the scientific discovery of dark matter that gave him the inspiration for the Dark Multiverse. It is DC's version of a full circle of life and death. Whether anyone likes it or not, both or vital to the preservation of the universe. There is no story worth telling without a beginning and an end.

9  The Dark Multiverse Isn't Stable But, Instead In Flux

It makes perfect sense that the polar opposite of a stable situation is one that is constantly in flux. So, when it comes to the stable worlds in the Multiverse, there always has to be something opposite of that stability. A universal yin vs yang scenario that goes on until the end of time. What makes the Dark Multiverse so unique is that at its core it relies solely on the fears of those in the Multiverse to power its sentient beings. Once fear is removed, they no longer exist.

8 DC History With A Twist

DC has told more stories than most hardcore comic nerds can recall. That is part of the beauty of comic books, nothing is completely set in stone. Once an ending begins with one character, a new version or perspective is created, allowing the process to begin again.

The Dark Multiverse is DC's way of expanding its already vast lore within its comics, allowing for the creation of various new comics devoted to the telling and retelling of the Dark Multiverse.

7 The Dark Multiverse Is Basically A Universal Parasite

Nothing likes to be compared to a parasite. It is one of the lowest insults that can be thrown around, and for good reason. Parasites exist to suck the lifeblood of more advanced species. Their only reason for existence is to do that one and only thing. So, in that regard, The Dark Multiverse is nothing but a universal parasite that unfortunately presents a balance that must be upheld for all life to exist.

6 Barbatos Wants To End Creation

There have been DC villains that have wanted to overthrow or destroy the earth but few actually seek to destroy creation in itself. Barbatos happens to be one of the few villains who seeks this. He is also one of the few who could accomplish this goal. In fact, he was once created and designed to destroy malfunctioned universes. He was initially supposed to a part of the balance before eventually betraying his cause and attempting to destroy existence itself.

5 The Creator Of The Multiverse Is Discovered

Because of all the different paths comic books have taken over the years, certain complexities have arisen making it hard for even comic readers to follow. One of these complexities is DC's Multiverse and Dark Multiverse.

The Multiverse was first created by a Super Celestial by the name of Perpetua as a means of obtaining more power. Her son Alpheus was assigned to the World Forge but eventually was overthrown by his servant Barbatos, who allowed the Dark Multiverse to exist.

4 Reasons Perpetua Created And Needed The Multiverse

Few villains have the time to patiently wait for their armies to grow in numbers on a cosmic scale. Perpetua the Super Celestial not only has the time but the patience. She created the Multiverse as a means of expanding her power. The inhabitants within it were to be her army and that army was constantly being engineered to serve their purpose. Her intention was to overthrow The Source. To do that, she needed a continual multiverse of powerful inhabitants.

3 Barbatos Is Batman's God

Barbatos was first introduced to Batman when Batman was sent back to the beginning of the earth. It was from that point forward that Barbatos worked to ensure that Batman would be the key to his revival and ultimate plan. So, to do that, Barbatos thoroughly managed Bruce Wayne's ancestors in such a way that he assured their survival. This makes Barbatos not just the creator of the Wayne family but the primordial god who engineered the creation of Bruce Wayne.

2 Barbatos's Top Generals Are Depraved Batmans

Since the Dark Multiverse consists of fluid fears and nightmares from the residents within the Multiverse, then it only makes sense for Barbatos to use Batman's biggest fears and make them into his top generals. Batman's strict code of not killing his enemies is due to his fear that if he ever did, he might not stop.

This turned out to be a valid fear as some of his darker versions take great pleasure in murder. With some combining Bruce's intellect with his super-powered foes' genetics.

1 What Is Nth Metal?

Nth Metal was first introduced to earth when a Thanagarian spaceship crash-landed in Egypt during the height of its civilization's glory. The metal, which is native to Thanagar, is known to have gravity negation effects allowing the users to fly but also gives them multiple other superpowers such as regeneration and metamorphosis to name a few. Many superheroes and villains use rings and weapons made of Nth Metal to achieve new and improved powers without the needed use of magic.
