There have been countless Green Lanterns over the years, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering it's a major intergalactic peacekeeping agency. Most recently, N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell's Far Sector introduced Jo Mullein to the DC Universe. However, she hasn't interacted with the actual DC Universe at large yet. But that might be changing soon, as Green Lantern 80th Anniversary Special seemingly confirms for the first time she's canon.

Mullein is the star of Far Sector, a Green Lantern series largely unconnected to the rest of the DC Universe. An army veteran who signed on to join the police after she served her tour of duty, Mullein was fired for turning in her partner, who beat an unarmed suspect of color. Approached by the Guardians for her impressive feat of inner strength and willpower, Mullein is given a wholly unique Green Lantern ring. Unlike the other rings that require a power battery, Mullein's automatically recharges over time, giving her a different set of limitations than the other Lanterns. However, her ring is also said to only operate for a year before it gives out.

Mullein is sent to the remote alien metropolis known as City Enduring to try and bring peace to the native feuding alien power structures. She's proven a capable and empathic Green Lantern, working with the people and standing up to authority when it uses its power to try and subjugate the populace. Despite Jemisin previously saying she wanted the character to feel connected to canon, Mullein has remained distant from the rest of the DC Universe, having never interacted with any established elements outside of the Guardians. This heavily indicated Mullein's adventures might not be canon.

However, in the Green Lantern 80th Anniversary Special, DC hints Mullein might be canon. While she's one of the only human Green Lanterns left off the cover -- which even includes the recently introduced Teen Lantern -- Mullein receives a breakdown in the updated Green Lantern Corps Secret Files. Her bio recounts how she was given a unique self-charging ring and sent to City Enduring, stating Mullein "has one year to prove she has what it takes" by helping keep the peace. While Far Sector has confirmed that Mullein only has a limited time to be a Green Lantern, it hadn't been outright stated Mullein could receive her ring on a more permanent basis if she succeeds in her current mission.

Along with her placement alongside other longstanding Green Lanterns like Alan Scott in the Green Lantern Corps Secret Files, this seems to suggest that Mullein could -- and will -- be a more important figure in the DC Universe going forward. It's also worth noting that Tai Pham, the rookie hero from the non-canon Green Lantern: Legacy, isn't included in the Earth-Prime breakdowns of notable Lanterns. This seems to indicate only canon Green Lanterns are included in the Secret Files.

Overall, Mullein would make a phenomenal addition to the current landscape of the DC Universe, especially as a counterpoint to other Green Lanterns. She could also potentially have a unique role with a team like the Justice League and further flesh out the Green Lanterns. If nothing else, the Green Lantern 80th Anniversary Special at least seems to confirm Mullein could make her way into the core DC Universe -- and suggests it's only a matter of time before she appears elsewhere.
