Throughout comic book history, fans have had the chance to be introduced to several different characters that have displayed phenomenal and even otherworldly abilities. Characters like Wonder Woman and Superman, who could arguably be considered within their respective landscapes as some of the most powerful beings in DC Comics, have found a special place in the hearts and minds of comic book fans, not only because of their ongoing character developments throughout their publication history but also because fans have always been intrigued and excited to see what new feats, writers would allow these individuals to display.

Furthermore, since her debut roughly 61 years ago, in Action Comics #252, titled “The Supergirl from Krypton,” Kara Zor-El, the biological cousin of Superman/Clark Kent, or as she is better known as Supergirl, has evolved throughout the years, her powers developing and ever-evolving as time has progressed. Ultimately, here are just a few strange abilities Supergirl has displayed throughout her publication history.

10 The Immortal Woman

Much like her cousin Clark Kent/Kal-El, Kara gains her superhuman abilities from absorbing solar radiation from Earth’s yellow sun. Much like her cousin, Kara has superhuman strength, speed, flight, heat and x-ray vision, as well as a litany of other abilities that makes her a formidable opponent. In some variations of her character, Supergirl is said to be even stronger than Superman, placing her respectfully into the category of one of DC’s Powerhouses. In addition to this, because of her Kryptonian physiology and the radiation of yellow sun radiation, Kara also has an extremely long lifespan, much longer than any human being on Earth. This longevity is so extreme that one could effectively put Kara in the category of an immortal being.

9 Biological Recovery

Much like her cousin, and frankly, all Kryptonian, one of Kara’s deadliest weaknesses is Kryptonite, a green, crystal-like mineral that scattered across the universe after the destruction of her homeworld, Krypton. As stated earlier, this alien mineral can weaken Kryptonians and even kill them if they are exposed to it long enough. However, what most people don't realize is that when moved away from Kryptonite, Kara’s like all Kryptonians’ accelerated healing factor kicks in repairing any damage inflicted almost instantaneously, making her one of DC’s most formidable heroes.

8 Super Aura

Because of their ability to absorb solar radiation, Kryptonians can create a bio-electric aura around their bodies. Interestingly, for Supergirl, this ability not only enhances her near invulnerability but also protects her already impenetrable skin, as well as her costume, from tearing or getting dirty during battle. Furthermore, there is a limit to this ability, we see countless times throughout Superman/Supergirl comics that loose-fitting clothing can be burned or ripped away, illustrating that this aura radiates only a few millimeters off the skin, answering why Kryptonians at least Superman and Supergirl, were tight-fitting customs.

7 Crystal Generation

One of her most unusual powers to date was Supergirl’s ability to create hard crystals from her body. While at the introduction of this new power, it was believed that Kara's newfound ability stemmed from her father, Zor-El’s experimentation on her, it was later revealed that this was not the case and instead, steamed from the fact that Kryptonian illness crystallized her blood when exposed to oxygen. Ultimately after being cured of this illness, she lost that specific ability.

6 Intangibility

When we think of a hero having the ability to vibrate at a particular frequency to phase through walls, you tend to think of the Flash, at least that's where most DC fans' minds would go.

However in one instance in comic book history, the Flash was seen teaching Supergirl how to vibrate so fast that her molecules slip through solid objects. In addition to this Kara can also vibrate fast enough that she doesn't reflect light, making her invisible.

5 Self-Sustenance

As stated several times in this article, Supergirl if under a yellow sun becomes one of the strongest beings in the DC universe. Granting her many different abilities, as does her cousin, Superman, exposure to solar radiation also allows Supergirl to operate as a battery of sorts, constantly being charged. It is because of this that Supergirl can go for a very long time, without any need to eat or sleep. In addition to this because of her unique physiology, she can even survive without effort in the vacuum of space.

4 Supersonic Voice

Furthermore, to add to her many strange abilities, Supergirl also can naturally distort and alter her voice to achieve several tasks including canceling out seismic waves.

This ability allows her to release a supersonic frequency that can knock out enemies.

3 Super-Breath

In addition to this Supergirl also can use her super breath to create winds described in comic books when she displays as hurricane-like. In addition to this Supergirl can also chill the air resulting in her frost breath, as well as can pull in large amounts of air into her lungs.

2 A Red Lantern Ring

During the storyline “Red Daughter of Krypton” Supergirl was chosen to join the ranks of the Red Lantern because of the massive amount of rage she possessed after her betrayal by Lobo the Space Bounty Hunter. Furthermore, with possessing this ring, Kara poses all the powers of the Red Lantern Corps. While the ring grants its users with abilities such as flight as well as the creation of hard light constructs, much like that of the Green Lantern Corps, however, what ability that all members of the Red Lantern Corps has is the ability to emit what is known as rage plasma: which is a vomit plasma, that can not only kill those it lands on but also ignite the rage dormant inside of them, allowing the Red Lantern to control them.

1 No Upper Limits

Supergirl DC

Consequently, like her cousin, Supergirl is a being that surpasses the comprehension and limits of the mundane. She has many different abilities throughout her publication history, however, what is fascinating about Supergirl is the fact that under the rays of the yellow sun, there is no true upper limit to her power, and has even been proven time and time gain that continued exposure to the yellow Sun’s radiation will only increase the Kryptonian’s abilities.
