Some of the strangest heroes of all time have come from the DC Universe, whether it be because of their outlandish powers, strange looks, or just the way they carry themselves. Yet, some of these weird heroes are also beloved, holding a special place in fans' hearts.

10 Animal Man Has Always Had One Of The Strangest Lives Of Any DC Hero

Cover to Animal Man Issue 1 1988 showing the titular hero running accompanied by several animals

Animal Man's powers are pretty run-of-the-mill, he can take on the characteristics of any animal and he's done a lot of pretty normal superhero stuff, like joining the Justice League, but his career has been a strange one. Once writer Grant Morrison got put on his book, things got weird for him. Morrison brought a whole lot of strange to Animal Man and every writer afterward followed suit.

Beyond that, Animal Man's origin as a simplistic Silver Age hero compared to what he would become made him very weird. He went from a one-dimensional character to a multi-faceted avatar of the animal world who sometimes met his own creators and dealt with his own fictional nature. That's just plain bizarre.

9 Leezle Pon Is A Sentient Smallpox Virus Green Lantern

Leezle Pon

The Green Lantern Corps pulls members from throughout the universe and some of those members are pretty strange. One of the strangest is Leezle Pon. Hailing from Sector 119, Pon was called in to take care of cases that had to do with biological problems. Pon proved to be clutch in the battle against the Sinestro Corps, helping to battle against Despotellis, the deadliest member of the Sinestro Corps.

Leezle Pon saved a lot of lives by defeating Despotellis and would go on to help the Corps in all kinds of ways, helping battle threats that were too small for other Lanterns.

8 Ch'p Is An Alien Squirrel Green Lantern

Ch'p in his Green Lantern outfit.

Another weird Green Lantern is Ch'p. Ch'p is basically a squirrel with a Green Lantern ring and probably the cutest member of the Corps. While he hasn't always been the most important member of the group in battle, he's always helped in whatever way he could. The Lantern of Sector 1014, Ch'p fought against the armies of Doctor Ub'x to earn his ring and is way tougher than a squirrel has any right to be.

Ch'p may look cute but he's unyielding in his battle against evil and will stop at nothing to save the innocent. Some people scoff at a squirrel superhero but Ch'p has proven them wrong whenever he steps onto the field.

7 Mogo Is The Most Important Green Lantern Of Them All

DC PLANETS - Mogo

Mogo isn't exactly the most social Green Lantern but there's a good reason for that - it's a living planet. Going into other star systems could wreak havoc on the planets there. However, its place in the Corps is very important, so important that the Green Lantern Corps just couldn't exist without him. Mogo is the being who guides the rings to their bearers, allowing for new members to be recruited.

Being a Green Lantern is very dangerous, so they need to be replaced. Without Mogo there to help, there would be no Green Lantern Corps. It's also one of the most powerful Green Lanterns of them all and when it shows up, things are about to get real.

6 Rebis Was A Composite Entity

Rebis with their arms spread from DC Comics' Doom Patrol

The Doom Patrol has long been home to the strangest heroes of them all and has had some amazing stories over the years. There have been lots of strange heroes on the team but one of the oddest was Rebis. Composed of Larry Tainor, Eleanor Poole, and the Negative Spirit, Rebis represented a being that combined man, woman, and energy.

Rebis was one of the team's most powerful members and was completely different than the sum of their parts. They were also one of the wisest beings on the team, thinking their way through the strange problem the team faced before unleashing their myriad powers.

5 Brother Power The Geek Is One Of The Weirdest Heroes Of The Silver Age

Brother Power

Brother Power the Geek was once a simple mannequin. However, after being struck by lightning, Brother Power came to life. Imbued with a variety of powers like superhuman strength and durability, energy absorption and redirection, and more, Brother Power traveled the world having weird counter-culture adventures.

Brother Power was basically a hippy mannequin and was so very of its time, the Silver Age, that it hurts. Brother Power hasn't been around in a very long time but it's still one of the most interesting and strange superheroes ever.

4 Detective Chimp Is A Smoking, Drinking Super Smart Chimp

Detective-Chimp-New-Nightmaster

Detective Chimp was created in the Silver Age, when ape characters were all the rage. He disappeared for years before reappearing in the run-up to Infinite Crisis, joining the Shadowpact in its battle against the Spectre and Eclipso in Days of Vengeance. Eventually joining the Justice League Dark, Detective Chimp would prove to be one of the unlikeliest heroes of them all.

3 Flex Mentallo Is The Man Of Muscle Mystery

Flex Mentallo in DC comics

Flex Mentallo was created by Grant Morrison for Doom Patrol. Starting his life as a weak nerd, he found a book that taught him the ways of Muscle Mystery. Mastering Muscle Mystery, he became so buff that he could influence reality itself when he flexes, becoming the Hero of the Beach. Going on some of the strangest adventures of them all, there are few heroes weirder than Flex Mentallo.

Dressed in his signature leopard skin Speedo, Flex Mentallo's powers manifest in all kinds of ways, starting with his Hero of the Beach aura, where the words float over his head. His powers are pretty amazing and have allowed him to defeat some truly weird threats.

2 Plastic Man Is Way More Powerful Than He Seems

Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters vs Nazi and bugs

Plastic Man has always seemed like a funny character and, well, he is. Unlike other heroes who stretch, Plastic Man can shape his body into just about anything he needs to be. He's pretty much indestructible as well and functionally immortal. However, what makes him weird isn't his powers but his attitudes towards things.

Plastic Man is one of the funniest heroes out there. Some people think that's all there is to him but they don't realize just how powerful he is or intelligent. Plastic Man is one of the best detectives on Earth, someone even Batman respects.

1 Metamorpho Is One The Silver Age's Weirdest Heroes

JUSTICE LEAGUE - Metamorpho

Metamorpho's powers aren't exactly the strangest - he's a shapeshifter that can transform his body into any element or multiple elements at once. His powers drastically changed his appearance and he's basically the DC version of the Thing, a man transformed into a freak. In the Silver Age, he went on the kind of weird and wild adventures DC was known for.

His strange appearance and powers make him one of the weirdest of DC's mainstream heroes. He's also one of the most powerful strange heroes, as his abilities make him basically immortal and his years of experience with them allow him to do all kinds of wild things.
