When it comes to threats and battles the heroes of the DC Universe often have to face, there are many threats that are tied directly to very powerful artifacts. There are several types of weapons and artifacts, from Earth-born items to cosmic weapons, but one of the most powerful kinds of artifacts is magic.
The world of magic has a very distinct place in the DC Universe. Heroes and villains alike have used these items for good and evil purposes. These items are one of a kind, so here are the ten most powerful magical artifacts in DC Comics.
10 Lasso of Truth
One of the first items that deserves a spot on this list has to be Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth. The hero and Amazon Princess (and demigod), has many magical items and weapons on her person that serve a purpose, but the most iconic of them all has to be the Lasso.
Depending on what era you are reading from, the Lasso was made of either Aphrodite or Gaea’s girdle, and was made nearly indestructible in its design and magical properties. It also has the ability to force whoever she ensnares to tell the truth, making it a powerful weapon.
9 Starheart
One unique magical item that has ties to the larger cosmic DC Universe has to be the Starheart. When the Guardians of the Universe gathered to bring order to the universe, they declared war on magic, nearly destroying it all until the remaining magic was contained into the orb known as the Starheart.
The orb became sentient and grew into the Green Flame of Life, and when its power grew in size it sent a portion of itself hurtling through space. It crashed to Earth, and was used by Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern (not part of the Corps).
8 Dreamstone
One powerful magic based weapon that the League has come into contact with over the years has been the Dreamstone, a weapon often used by Justice League villain Doctor Destiny. In the Post-Crisis DC Universe, it was revealed the Dream Stone was originally made by Dream, otherwise known as the Sandman.
It was later taken by Doctor Destiny from his mother, who’s ex was the caretaker of Dream. He manipulated the stone and rewired it to work only for him, and used it in his plots to remake reality. The flaws have represented alternate realities in the DC Universe.
7 Soultaker
One truly powerful magic based weapon that has been a mainstay weapon of DC Hero Katana is the Soultaker Sword. A powerful weapon, the sword can cut through most metals and takes the souls of those the weapon ends, trapping it within the sword and allowing the wielder to communicate with those same spirits.
The sword was used by the Yakuza to slay the leader’s brother, but the woman who would become Katana took the sword as the slain man was her husband, and she has used it to get justice for her husband’s passing and fight alongside the Outsiders.
6 Cloak of Destiny
One item has a close tie to one of the most powerful magic based heroes in the DC Universe, Doctor Fate. The Cloak of Destiny is one of the pieces of Doctor Fate’s suit that allow him to fight the forces of chaos and destruction in the world.
Originally worn and belonging to Nabu the Wise, who in turn passed them on to hero and one time Justice Society of America member Kent Nelson. Tasked with protecting the world from evil, the Cloak is especially helpful as it is fireproof, which allows Fate to face many demonic entities and foes.
5 Spear of Destiny
One item that ties into a more biblical magic based story in DC Comics involves the Spear of Destiny. The spear was notorious for being the spear that pierced the side of Jesus Christ in the Bible, and was later recovered and used for nefarious purposes by Adolf Hitler during WWII.
After a battle between Captain Nazi and The Spectre nearly destroyed the Spectre, Hitler in his final days corrupted the spear to corrupt anyone who used or held it. Superman was plagued by visions of him becoming evil when he held the weapon, as well as Shazam and others.
4 Trident of Poseidon
One of the most powerful magical weapons on Earth has to be the Trident of Poseidon, the weapon most often used by the Justice League member Aquaman. The King of Atlantis and the high seas uses this weapon to channel the power of the god Poseidon himself, making Aquaman a truly formidable opponent.
The weapon allows the wielder to control any body of water, conjure up water, create powerful storms and fogs, move at super speeds in the water and create many different vehicles made purely out of water, on top of many other things. It is a powerful weapon.
3 Heart of Darkness
While the world of Apokolips is well known as a cosmic threat thanks to its despicable tyrant of a leader Darkseid, the world is not without its own source of magic, and its no surprise that the magic of Apokolips would be corrupt in nature. The Heart of Darkness was mined on Apokolips and used to crush anyone who opposed Darkseid’s rule.
However eventually it became bonded to the demonic agent of vengeance known as Eclipso. Arriving on Earth, the Heart of Darkness housed Eclipso within it, and possessed the scientist known as Bruce Gordon, becoming a powerful weapon himself.
2 Book of Destiny
One of the most powerful artifacts in the universe has to be the Book of Destiny. Many will recognize this artifact after its use in the recent Arrowverse crossover event Elseworlds, but the book is well known in comics as the book that has everything that is and will be written.
Originally chained to the right hand of Destiny of the Endless, the book soon found four individuals who couldn’t be seen. Destiny parted with the book and made sure to get it into the hands of the Challengers of the Unknown to fix and away from the Luck Lords.
1 Helmet of Fate
Created by the Lords of Order, the Helmet of Fate has to be the most powerful magical artifact in the DC Universe. Combined with the Cloak of Destiny and the Amulet of Anubis, the Helmet turns the wielder into the hero known as Doctor Fate to fight against the agents of chaos and destructive magic.
The helmet allows the wielder to summon and use any magic known in this realm or any other realm. It can also enhance other basic forms of magic, gives the wielder an awareness of reality itself and uses symbols of fate to battle chaos agents.
