Luke Fox is one of the youngest characters introduced in the DC Universe. Unlike most characters, he has no history in the pre-Flashpoint era. The character was created years into the New 52 after it had mostly figured itself out. He made his first appearance in Batwing #19, and kept his own solo comic for just over a year before being shuffled into the Batman Eternal weekly maxi-series, then eventually into the initial Rebirth run of James Tynion’s Detective Comics.

Since then, the character has fallen off the map within the main DC Universe, but that hasn’t stopped him from being a primary side character in CW’s Batwoman series.

10 NOT THE FIRST BATWING

David Zavimbe

It’s not talked about now, but Luke is by no means the first Batwing. That honor goes to David Zavimbe, a character created by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette. Though he had something of a different origin in the original timeline, in the New 52 Earth David was a child soldier who was trained in the art of fighting and wound up working in a group known as the Army of Dawn.

This version of Batwing maintained his own ongoing for 19 issues before deciding that Batman’s way wasn’t for him, returning the armor and deciding to go it on his own. This leads Bruce to go back to his “original” option, Luke.

9 SAVED BY BATMAN AS A TEEN

Luke’s first time meeting Batman wasn’t when he was being approached to become Batwing. In the Batwing: Year Zero storyline, we see Luke as a much younger man, in his early teen years. After ticking off a street gang, they came back to get revenge on him with greater numbers.

Luke was probably supposed to be done for then, but Batman happened to appear right on time. So Luke got the opportunity to actually fight alongside Batman in pushing all the gang members away, with Batman rushing off afterward. This impression would stick with the young Fox child for years to come.

8 CHILDHOOD FRIEND IS A VILLAIN

It’s a little ridiculous, but Batwing’s youngest friend somehow wound up becoming a supervillain. The two of them attended the same high school together, but Russ had to deal with too much bullying.

Eventually, he wound up modifying a drug known as Snakebite, which made him several times his size and capable of killing the bully who humiliated him the most. He nearly blew up the school with a bomb, but Luke managed to stop him, saving the school at the cost of his best friend.

7 HIS SISTER IS A GENIUS

Luke’s sister Tiffany is a brilliant young girl with a 190 IQ. Though it’s rather common in superhero series, it’s not out of place here. Their father Lucius designs all the gadgets for Batman and his organization, while Luke himself is a genius who’s proven himself time and again as one of the leading “smart” people in the Bat-Family.

The only thing about this that’s new or surprising is that her intelligence isn’t shown much in the series—hopefully, in the future they’ll think more about incorporating her a bit more.

6 A PRIVILEGED KID

The first thing people have to know about Luke Fox is that he grew up completely privileged. With Lucius serving in such high capacity within the Wayne Enterprises organization, Luke was given everything he needed to make it in the world. He attended MIT and was able to graduate with not one but two different degrees in both business management and engineering, following in the footsteps of his father.

When he graduated, his thesis statement involved creating clothing that could be bulletproof and explosion-proof—something that was far too expensive to make on a mass level but he would eventually add the functionality to his Batwing armor.

5 MMA FIGHTER

Luke Fox as an MMA fighter in DC Comics

Either as a method of ticking off his dad or just to help him figure out something he could do that was entirely his own thing, Luke took to MMA fighting at a young age. He began training as a young child in high school and was a prodigy even then.

But when Batman revealed his Batman Incorporated idea, Luke knew he had to find a way in. So he took to getting involved in MMA bouts and cage fighting to figure out a way to get Batman’s attention. Luke’s trained in multiple martial arts styles, which comes in handy when he’s in battles where his suit gets neutralized.

4 FOUGHT IN A SUPERPOWERED MARTIAL ARTS TOURNAMENT

This just makes sense. If you’re a cage fighter who then turns into a superhero, it’s missing an opportunity if they aren’t in at least one or two fighting tournaments. Once while on a mission to take down a villain named Caligula, Luke wound up being invited to a martial arts tournament for entertainment.

What he wasn’t aware of was he’d have enemies vastly more powerful than him, some even boasting legitimate superpowers. Refusing to wait to see how strong they could get, Luke eventually snuck into Caligula’s house and kidnapped him to shut down his criminal actions.

3 DESIGNED HIS OWN ARMOR

Unsurprisingly with Luke’s genius, he was eventually responsible for designing his own armor. After David Zavimbe returned the armor, Bruce decided to give the suit a complete overhaul, with a new design, more safety features, and a mask to cover the face entirely.

But while Luke used this suit to decent effect, eventually he couldn’t deal with the fact that he didn’t understand the ins and outs perfectly. Once his suit got wrecked, he redesigned it from the ground up for himself.

2 DATED BATGIRL

This happened right before Rebirth so it’s not talked about as much these days. But during the last bits of Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr’s Batgirl of Burnside run, they introduced a new love interest for Barbara: Luke Fox.

For a brief period, Luke took off the costume and decided to focus on a new business venture, and during that time he was also in a relationship with Batgirl herself. The two were proper official during Batgirl vol. 4 #45, which focused on Batgirl’s friend Alysia getting married.

1 CREATED LEVIATHAN

Several years before Brian Bendis introduced Leviathan into Superman's world, we had Future’s End, they show everything five years into the future. There, Luke creates an organization known as Leviathan. They’re a massive group that shuts off all weapons to major players globally plus in Gotham.

Eventually, he convinces all the major players of a way to shut down Leviathan once an for all, leading them into a trap on Dinosaur Island. There, all of Batman’s friends in the Club of Heroes work with Batwing to bring down all of them for good.
