Riddler is easily one of Batman's most popular foes, finding himself alongside the Joker, Two-Face, Bane, and a wealth of other icons in his extensive rogue's gallery. However, Enigma is far less well known, despite being intrinsically linked to the Riddler.

The lack of awareness for Enigma isn't too surprising, given their limited appearance in DC's comics. They haven't had a wealth of longevity like other Batman foes, whittling away much quicker, and so here are ten things that you may not have known about them.

10 Enigma Is The Riddler's Daughter

Enigma with The Riddler staring down at the reader in DC Comics.

Riddler's name is in of itself a pun, with the shortened version of Edward Nygma being Enigma, a play on his gimmick of puzzles and riddles. As such, it was only natural that the character who bore this name would have some tie to the green question-mark donning mad man.

The original Engima, who debuted in a Teen Titans run, was revealed to be Riddler's daughter to nobody's surprise. She used a question mark for a weapon, wore green like her father, and had an affinity for riddles, with a bit more humor thrown in.

9 She Was A Member Of The Teen Titans And Titans East

Enigma made her debut when she joined the Titans with another villainous daughter, Duela Dent, who is the offspring of Earth-3's Jokester (an alternate Joker). However, her time with the heroic teens was short-lived and she quickly found herself on the opposition's end.

Later, she was recruited by Deathstroke to the Titans East. She accepted his invitation in hopes to prove herself to her father and, alongside Duela Dent, she broke into the Belle Reve Prison, helping in a mission against the Teen Titans, more than proving her worth as a villain.

8 Enigma Helped To Kidnap Cyborg And Miss Martian

When Enigma broke into the Belle Reve Prison, she and Duela Dent disabled the security system which allowed for the Titans East to kidnap none other than Cyborg and Miss Martian. This was quite the win for the up and coming villains of tomorrow.

They didn't stop there in their vendetta against the Teen heroes, however, as Dent and Enigma were put in charge of torturing Raven which they did in a hall of mirrors. However, Enigma was thwarted when Duela turned against her with the aid of Beast Boy.

7 She Fought Alongside Her Father Against Batman

Enigma wasn't just a friend turned foe to the Teen Titans, building on the ever-growing roster of iconic character's offsprings. Following her debut and subsequent team-up with Deathstroke and co, she reunited with her father.

Together, Enigma and the Riddler took on the Batman, but things took a sour and unexpected turn, with the 2011 comic ending in a rather twisted fashion.

6 She Was Murdered By Her Own Father

Naturally, you'd expect for Riddler and Enigma's team-up to end with Batman beating the duo and throwing them in Arkham - typical stuff for the Dark Knight's villains, before their eventual and inevitable escape.

However, Enigma and Riddler's team-up was anything but normal, as the comic, Batman #712, ended with Riddler asking the question, "what's purple and green and bleeds profusely?" before ending his own daughter.

5 There Was Another Enigma In The Trinity Miniseries

Edward Nygma's daughter wasn't the only one to don the moniker of Enigma, with another character taking on the mantle, albeit as a direct descendant but as another person altogether who happened to share the same name.

This Enigma debuted in the miniseries Trinity which ran from 2008 to 2009, a handful of years before the first Enigma's gruelly demise. He had half his face hidden by a mask, which many presumed to mean that he was an elseworld Harvey Dent and Riddler mashup, and he worked alongside another villain, Morgaine Le Fey, more commonly known as the Enchantress.

4 The Second Enigma Is The Anti-Matter Earth's Riddler

Whilst the first Enigma was the Riddler's daughter, the second Enigma was, in actuality, another take on the Riddler altogether. Eventually, this villain clad in half a mask's true colors is shown to the world by none other than Superman.

He scans Enigma with his X-ray vision and discovers that he is the Anti-Matter Earth's own Riddler. In this universe, the Quizmaster, Enigma, formed a team known as the Justice Underground in an attempt to rival the Crime Syndicate. Ultraman, Earth-3's Superman, burned his face and killed his wife, son, and daughter, creating a horrifying backstory for a menacing foe.

3 He Teamed Up With The Crime Syndicate

Whilst this Enigma initially set out to fight the Crime Syndicate and denounce their superiority, he found himself taking on their aid in the fight against Krona. In doing so, Enigma resurrects his daughter, releases the Earth's soul, and returns home to the Anti-Matter Universe.

It's a somewhat happy ending, especially compared to that of the other Enigma who finds herself murdered by her own father. It's strange to think that only a few years earlier, another Riddler went through Hell to bring his back.

2 Anti-Matter Earth's Enigma Has The Same Life-Force As Riddler

The Riddler from Batman: Arkham Knight

There are a lot of differences between the Riddler we're familiar with and the one of the Anti-Matter Universe, such as the alias that they use, with the latter calling himself the Quizmaster and being dubbed Enigma by the Enchantress, but plenty is similar too.

One thing that stands out that nearly outs Enigma as the Riddler's alternate version is that he shares the same life-force, or at least a very similar one, as well as an incredibly similar motif and style of working, which the Riddler notes.

1 Duela Dent Also Claimed To Be The Riddler's Daughter At One Point

Duela Dent debuted in Batman Family #6 in 1976, way back when, and has made multiple appearances since. She takes her name Dent from her mother, Evelyn, otherwise known as Three-Face. It was then, at a much later date, revealed that her father was Jackie, better known as the Jokester.

However, along the way, she claimed to be the daughter to a few other villains, such as the Penguin. When she debuted, she called herself the Joker's Daughter but has since gone under the alias of Card Queen, Catgirl, Harlequin, Penguin's Daughter, Scarecrone, and, at one point, the Riddler's Daughter. However, this was blatantly untrue, and she eventually turned on the real Riddler's daughter, coming full circle.
