The release of 2023’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods followed the adventures of one of DC’s closest superhero teams, the Shazam Family. Sometimes known as the Shazamily or the Marvel Family, the Vasquez house of adopted children each shares the mystical power of Shazam. Of course, their family dynamic isn’t entirely unique in the DC universe.

There are a few superhero teams like the Justice Society or the Titans who have developed a similar family dynamic over the years. Likewise, superheroes like Superman and Batman have assembled huge families of heroes around themselves that have continued to grow closer. Even outcasts like the Doom Patrol have found a family with each other when they had nobody else.

8 Shazam Family

The Wizard chose Billy Batson as his powerful Champion of Shazam. However, the young hero soon discovered that he could share his power with those closest to him. During a battle with Dr. Sivana, Batson chose to empower his new adoptive family.

Shazam found a new home with the Vasquez family. His adopted siblings were Mary Bromfield, Freddy Freeman, Jr., Eugene Choi, Pedro Peña, and Darla Dudley. Batson didn’t initially warm to his new family, but he soon realized that he could count on them. They became not only his new family but his powerful crimefighting partners.

7 Justice Society

Some teams in the DC universe like the Justice League gather together to fulfill a need and protect the planet. However, other teams like the Justice Society have grown together over the years to find a new purpose with the younger generation. DC’s original heroes like Doctor Fate, Wildcat, and Hawkman gathered together as the JSA to fight during the war.

However, the original members of the JSA stayed together due to the close friendships that developed over the years. The JSA started training the next generation of heroes, which further connected the team. They became more of a family unit than a superhero squad, which separated the Justice Society from other DC teams.

6 Doom Patrol

Another team that has developed a close-knit relationship over the years is the Doom Patrol. Originally brought together by Dr. Niles Caulder/The Chief, the Doom Patrol members were survivors of horrific accidents that transformed their bodies.

Heroes like Robotman and Elasti-Girl became parental figures to the newer heroes that joined the Doom Patrol over the years. Characters like the Teen Titan’s Beast Boy first found a family with the Doom Patrol after the death of his parents. They aren’t the most typical family in the DC universe, but the Doom Patrol still takes care of their own.

5 Flash Family

Jay Garrick first launched the legacy of the Flash in DC’s Golden Age, which Barry Allen furthered. However, it was Wally West’s debut as Kid Flash that really kicked off the development of the popular and ever-growing Flash Family.

Jay, Barry, and Wally each still operate as The Flash and their closest allies and sidekicks joined the speedster family to carry on the legacies. Wally West’s sidekicks like Bart Allen/Impulse ran alongside Barry Allen’s new Kid Flash, Wallace West. The next generation of heroes like Irey West continues to expand the powerful Flash Family as Thunderheart.

4 Titans

The sidekicks of the DC universe like Robin, Aqualad, Speedy, and Wonder Girl all formed together in their youth as Teen Titans. They grew up together and formed lifelong bonds that brought them together as a family that evolved into the experienced heroes of the Titans.

The Titans have separated a few times over the years to explore different paths, though they always find their way back to each other. Following the events of the Dark Crisis, the family dynamic of the Titans helped save the day as they became DC’s new premiere superhero team.

3 Young Justice

The Teen Titans weren’t DC’s only team of young heroes that formed together over the years. Heroes like Impulse, Superboy, and the third Robin and the second Wonder Girl found their own family when they started working together as Young Justice.

Much like the Titans, Young Justice developed a close bond that continued as they graduated to other teams like the Teen Titans. The team and its members spent a few years apart after reality-shifting events like Flashpoint. However, Young Justice returned with an even closer bond in the modern DC era that welcomed even more young heroes to the family.

2 Superman Family

Debut of the new Superman Family in Action Comics

Superman was originally known as the Last Son of Krypton, though that title isn’t exactly true anymore. Numerous survivors of Krypton like Supergirl have turned up over the years, and he has added another Son of Krypton named Jon Kent.

Superman’s young clone Conner later joined his family as one of the best versions of Superboy. The Superman Family took a bit of time to truly form together, though the Dawn of DC line-wide event refocused on the characters. Natasha Irons’ Steel and Kong Kenan’s Super-Man also officially joined the family when they received their own matching costumes.

1 Batman Family

It might surprise some fans that a proven loner like Batman would also be a dedicated family man. Batman’s long history with Robin kicked off the Dark Knight’s ongoing desire to increase the size of his crime-fighting family.

Dick Grayson helps lead the family as Nightwing, which also features long-time partners like Batgirl and former sidekicks like Red Hood and Red Robin. The relationships can sometimes be tense, though they are all kept together by the love of Alfred Pennyworth. Characters like the Signal, Huntress, and even Harley Quinn have also joined Batman’s close family over the years.
