Saturday, August 17, 2019 is #BlackCatAppreciationDay, with many people taking to social media to share photos of their favorite ebony felines. Perhaps the most well-known black cat in superhero comics is DC's Catwoman, as Selina Kyle has played a prominent role in Batman's adventures both in print and on the small and large screens. In honor of the special day, DC shared a photo of its most famous Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer, from 1992's Batman Returns, where she played opposite Michael Keaton's Dark Knight.RELATED: DC Solicitations for November 2019 Introduce a New Green Lantern to the DCUThe tweet from the official DC Twitter account included a simple "Meow," the #BlackCatAppreciationDay hashtag and a photo Pfeiffer's Catwoman in a sultry pose from Batman Returns.

Batman Returns was the sequel to the 1989 Batman film that saw the titular character square off against The Joker, played by Jack Nicholson. The sequel brought in Catwoman as an uneasy ally to Batman, who also had to contend with the Penguin (Danny DeVito).

Though Pfeiffer never got the opportunity to reprise her role as Catwoman, the DC character did receive a standalone film in 2004. However, the Halle Berry-led film was a dud with critics and at the box office. Catwoman would later appear on the big screen in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, portrayed by Anne Hathaway.

DC relaunched Catwoman in a new ongoing series in July 2018 by writer/artist Joelle Jones. The title picked up after the events of Batman #50, which saw Selina Kyle leave Bruce Wayne standing at the altar on their wedding day. She will also co-star in Batman/Catwoman by writer Tom King and artist Clay Mann, with the title expected to debut in January 2020.
