Throughout the DC Universe, we've seen a broad spectrum of dads. We've seen fathers that have shown their children love and affection, but we've also seen Fathers that are just total jerks to there kids. Be they blood relatives, on the side of good or evil, or only exist to strengthen the main character's goals, The DC Universe has no shortage of Fathers.

So, we decided to take a look at five of the best Dads in the DC Universe, as well as five of the absolute worst that everyone's favorite comic book publisher has created.

10 Best: Jonathan Kent

Kicking off this list is the original dad of the DC Universe. When a baby arrives in a space ship, A couple named Jonathan and Martha Kent decide to raise the young boy as their own. Jonathan Kent is everything a father should be; kind, supportive, firm, and willing to do anything to help his son.

Has he made some mistakes? Yeah, but that's what makes him the perfect father. He may no longer be with us, but the legacy of Jonathan lives on with his son and grandson. He's a heck of a lot better than how Superman's biological father has been acting as of late.

9 Worst: Trigon

Trigon Demon Chariot Teen Titans 22

When someone says they're the child of Satan, you should expect that they didn't have a good childhood. Raven was the spawn of a human woman and the DC Universe version of the ruler of the underworld, Trigon. When taken to Azurath, Raven's mother was killed, along with witches that help them escape by Trigon and Raven was forced to be by his side for years, until she escaped.

While he has tried to train her in his dark ways, Trigon's only reason for giving birth to Raven was so that he may use her as a portal to our universe and conquer it. Did we forget that he's essentially the devil of the DC Universe?

8 Best: Thomas Wayne

Thomas Wayne Batman Zero Year

They say that the rich only care about themselves and money. Those two things don't describe Thomas Wayne. Throughout his life, he's used his wealth to help the people of Gotham City. He's also given his Son, Bruce, nothing but respect and love. He's even taught him a valuable lesson about how we use failure as a learning experience.

Sure, some versions have shown that he has a few dark secrets that he's kept from his loved ones, but he does it for the sake of bettering the people of Gotham.

7 Worst: Darkseid

Darkseid is such a terrible father that he gave away his only kid as part of a treaty. While it could be up to debate if that truly makes him a bad father, it all goes out the window when you learn that he's spent years trying to figure out ways to work around the treaty and kill everyone on New Genesis.

Even worse is that he treated his adopted son, Mr. Miracle, like another pawn to help him aid in Galatic Conquest and wouldn't mind killing his biological son, Orion. If that doesn't scream "worst father of all time," then we don't know what does.

6 Best: Batman

After he lost his father, Bruce Wayne has dedicated his life to continuing his father's legacy, while also fighting crime dressed as a Bat. Along the way, Batman has taken in several children so that they could live a better life. While Batman has shown to be a strict parent and mentor, he has shown that he cares about Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian.

He gave them a place to call home, he helped Tim and Dick grieve from the loss of their parents, he tried to set Jason straight, and he even told Damian how proud he makes him. He may be the Dark Knight, but he's got a heart of gold.

5 Worst: Lex Luthor

In an attempt to make a Superman of his own, Lex Luthor combined his DNA with Superman's to create Superboy, aka Conner Kent. After Superboy proved to be inferior to the Man of Steel and his multiple impersonators, Luthor disowned the boy and has tried to kill him along with his arch-enemy.

What were you expecting from Lex Luthor? He let his father die so that he could get his inheritance and his company.

4 Best: Jim Gordon

jim gordon

Jim Gordon has done some questionable things throughout his life. He had an affair with his wife, and he faked his death to get to the Joker. Despite these terrible acts, Jim Gordon has done everything to make things right.

He's apologized to his wife; he did everything to care for his son; he's shown on numerous occasions that he loves his daughter with all his heart, and he helped a little boy when his parent's died right before his very eyes. He may not be perfect, but he's shown to be the ultimate family man.

3 Worst: Deathstroke

deathstroke

Being the world's deadliest assassin doesn't leave much in the way of being a good father. Deathstroke has treated his children the same way he treats his targets: without leniency. His oldest son, Grant, was killed while trying to emulate his father, He killed his other boy, Joseph, who was Possessed by Trigon, and he forced his daughter, Rose, to ingest a potion that drove her insane.

Rose was so crazy that she once gouged her own eyes out to prove that she could be just like him. Slade sure isn't going to win Father of the Year any time soon. Maybe that's why he kept trying to make Robin his apprentice in the Teen Titans TV series.

2 Best: Superman

Superman takes to the skies with his son Jonathan Kent flying alongside him.

Like his father before him, Superman has turned into a dad. After his return to the DC Universe, Superman spent his time teaming up with his son, Jonathan Samuel Kent and showing him the ropes of what it means to be a Super Hero.

Like his father, Clark Kent has given his son nothing but love, affection, and raised him to be quite the young man. If anyone messes with him, Superman will provide you with a stern whooping like never before. What's left to say? He's Superman. He's the best of all of us.

1 Worst: Ra's Al Ghul

Some people will say that Ra's Al Ghul cares about his daughter, Talia, profoundly and, despite his insane ambitions, is at least a decent father. We'll give you that he cares about Talia's well being, but what about his other children? Ra's Al Ghul has been alive for generations and given birth to many children. However, if they didn't live up to his expectations, he disowned them or have them killed.

Not only that, but he has another living daughter, outside of Talia, that he sees as a failure. Nyssa, his other child, was sent to a concentration camp in WWII. We're not making that one up. Because of this, and being an eco-terrorist, she's rebelled against Ra's and has even teamed up with Batman to foil his evil plans.
