Over the many, many years since Batman’s creation, the dark knight has starred or co-starred in some of the greatest series (animated and otherwise) to have ever hit television screens. Since the 60s Batman has been bringing his high-tech, crime-fighting antics to Bat-fans all around the world.

From his iconic animated series to the live-action series starring Adam West, the television history of The Bat is both incredibly varied and filled with some of Batman’s greatest adventures ever. But which of these series tops the list of Batman’s greatest hits?

10 The Adventures Of Batman (Batman With Robin The Boy Wonder)

Adventures of Batman and Robin animated series

The Adventures Of Batman was an animated series that showcased twelve-minute segments of Batman adventures that had been taken from the Batman/Superman Hour. In 1968 it would be rebranded by CBS as a thirty-minute series without the addition of the Superman and Superboy content.

After it’s rebranding the series would be called Batman With Robin The Boy Wonder. The series featured Olan Soule as the voice of Batman though he would later come to be replaced by Adam West.

After The Adventures Of Batman finished its seventeen episode run, the dynamic duo would bounce around between series like Super Friends and The New Scooby-Doo Movies. In 1977, however, CBS would begin airing a new animated series based on the adventure of Batman called The New Adventures Of Batman.

This series would follow Batman, Robin, and Batgirl as they patrolled Gotham fighting for justice. The series is notable for its introduction of the character Batmite, who served to complicate the lives of Batman and his partners. The also featured the iconic Adam West as the voice of Batman.

8 Batman The Brave And The Bold

Much like the Batman series of the sixties, Batman The Brave And The Bold featured a lighter take on the dark knight. The series followed Batman as he teamed up with other, often overlooked or minor, heroes as they went up against different villains of the week.

Throughout the series, Batman would team-up with the likes of Plastic Man, Green Arrow, Jamie Reyes the Blue Beetle and many more. While the series was canceled after only three seasons there was a crossover film with Scooby-Doo announced in 2018.

Batman (1966)

Perhaps the most iconic Batman series of the sixties, Batman, Starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin respectively, is well-known even in modern times as one of the greatest Batman series to have hit television screens.

The series gave viewers the iconic Batman performance by West, a performance that is still regularly referenced in contemporary comics and media. In fact, the campy and lighthearted series is so influential that it’s recently been reinvented (and continued) as a comic series written by Jeff Parker with art by Mike Allred.

6 Young Justice

Though Young Justice may not specifically be about Batman himself, it does feature the dark knight and his influence rather heavily. Batman has never been just Bruce Wayne, Batman is meant to be a symbol of what men can do when fighting against great odds.

It is this lesson that has inspired numerous generations of younger heroes. Batman may not be the star of this series, but his influence and his presence are felt throughout every single episode of the landmark series about the next generation of heroes.

5 Gotham

When Gotham first began its run on Fox, it caught a lot of flak for telling a story that many fans had never heard, with characters that were all too familiar.

While the series mostly focused on a young Jim Gordon as he struggled to keep the violent streets and villains of Gotham at bay, it also went a long way towards establishing the story of a young (recently orphaned) Bruce Wayne. The series would continue to follow the pair as they take the first steps towards the heroes that they would one day become.

4 The New Batman Adventures

The-New-Batman-Adventures

A sequel series to the landmark Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures more closely follows the people who are supporting Batman. Batgirl, Nightwing, and Robin all play more fleshed out roles throughout a series which would also feature other heroes like Supergirl, Etrigan The Demon and many others that would eventually go on to find roles in both Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Though the series was a continuation of the work laid out by Batman: The Animated Series, like many of Batman’s own proteges, it would have a difficult time living up to its predecessor.

3 The Batman

Though The Batman is one of the more recent Batman entries featured in this article it’s also one the most artistically pleasing and spectacular series to have sprouted from the Batman mythos. Jackie Chan Adventures artist, Jeff Matsuda, would provide the stunning and wholly unique character designs that would put incredible new spins on some of Gotham’s most recognizable villains.

Not only was the series an artistic marvel, but it was also critically acclaimed as well. Throughout the course of its five-season run, The Batman would be nominated for no less than twelve daytime Emmys and go on to win six.

2 Batman Beyond

While series like Batman: The Animated Series and The Batman would bring critical acclaim in the form of Emmys to the feet of Batman, there is perhaps no Batman series that was more revolutionary than Batman Beyond.

For the first time in history, a Batman series dared to go outside of the established canon (with the exception of the creation of Harley Quinn). Batman Beyond would show the world where Bruce’s life of fighting crime would lead him, but more importantly, it would introduce the world to Terry McGinnis and the future of Gotham.

1 Batman: The Animated Series

While Batman: The Animated Series is not the original animated Batman series, it is often looked upon as one of the greatest. With a spectacular, career-defining, performance by Kevin Conroy (who would later go on to reprise his role in both The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond) as the dark knight himself, Batman: The Animated Series would introduce a generation of soon-to-be comics fans to the dark knight.

The series was not only extremely popular (even now) but it would go on to win four Emmys, including outstanding animated program.
