"City Of Bane" was the culmination of Tom King's entire Batman run. Bane had defeated Batman, taken his city, and did what Batman could never do- end crime in the city. His methods were quite different from anything Batman would consider, but he succeeded where his nemesis had failed.

Filled with twists and turns and a rather shocking death (this article will contain SPOILERS), "City Of Bane" is a story that will be remembered for a long time. However, with as many questions as it answers, there are still a lot of questions left in its wake. This list is going to take a look at those questions.

10 How Was Bane Able To Take Control Of Everything So Quickly

When Batman #75 opens, Bane is already in complete control of Gotham City. The GCPD is being run by members of Batman's rogue's gallery and the people of the city are used to the new regime. From the looks of things, Bane and his group are the de facto government of the city.

So, what happened to the rest of the city of government? Besides Gotham Girl and a few other exceptions, most of the villains could be taken out by a concerted effort from the GCPD with their guns. Was it Psycho Pirate's doing? How did it happen? The story never really says.

9 Why Is Psycho Pirate So Sane?

Psycho-Pirate has never been the sanest of individuals, even before his experiences during Crisis On Infinite Earths. The Medusa Mask's mind-altering abilities seemed to affect him to a certain extent and once he became the only person to remember the old multiverse, his insanity only grew.

So, why is he so normal in this story? Sure, it's mentioned somewhere that the Ventriloquist can control him because only Scarface can control the Ventriloquist, but this doesn't explain why this formerly insane villain is now helping one of Batman's greatest foes take over a city in such a rational manner.

8 Why Is Psycho Pirate Even Helping Bane In The First Place?

Psycho Pirate is a huge part of Bane's plans. Without Psycho-Pirate, Bane never would have been able to take control of Batman's other enemies and use them as enforcers for his regime. Way back in "I Am Suicide", it was revealed that Psycho Pirate was using his powers to keep Bane off Venom.

So, why was Psycho Pirate, a man who remembers everything that has ever been forgotten or destroyed in the DC Universe helping Bane take over Batman's city? Why did he help him get off Venom? Bane isn't actually a physical threat to Psycho-Pirate since he could control Bane. So why is he helping him?

7 How Does Catwoman Know Where And When To Find Batman?

After being defeated by Bane and thrown out of the city, Batman goes to one of his former mentors, the Memory Of The Mountain for help and training. When he gets there, he's ambushed and left for dead by henchmen of the thief Magpie. Nearly immediately after this, Catwoman comes to his aid.

So, how did Catwoman know where he was? It's revealed elsewhere in the story that Batman has a secret method of communicating with the Batfamily, but he hasn't had contact with Catwoman since their aborted wedding.  Her timing was way too good.

6 What Was Batman's Secret Method Of Communication?

The endgame of the whole thing involved members of the Batfamily, starting with Damian Wayne, breaking Bane's rules and invading Gotham. This has some rather drastic consequences, but it's the thing that sets up Batman's eventual return and triumph over Bane's forces.

So, how was he communicating with them all over long distances? He revealed that he can communicate with them through fighting, but for most of the story, he was nowhere near them. Not only that, but Alfred somehow got a message to him while completely under Thomas Wayne's power. It must have been an impressive system.

5 How Come Psycho Pirate Never Noticed Clayface Was Masquerading As The Joker?

Clayface on a rampage in Batman

Batman had a mole planted in Bane's forces the whole time he was away- Clayface. Using his shapeshifting powers, he took the Joker's place sometime after Catwoman defeated him in Batman #48-49. Here's the thing- Bane had Psycho Pirate mentally control all of the villains.

Why didn't Psycho-Pirate realize that Joker wasn't actually under his control? In the past, he's been able to use the Medusa Mask to read the emotions of those around him. Batman mentions that Clayface can't be controlled, so it stands to reason that Psycho-Pirate wouldn't be able to sense Clayface's emotions. This should have been a huge red flag.

4 How Did Catwoman's "Training" Help Batman?

After she rescued him, Catwoman and Batman went into hiding in Paris before going to Hawaii to intercept Magpie and what her goons stole form the Memory of the Mountain. While there, Batman wants her to help him train for his rematch with Bane and the forces at his disposal.

Now, Catwoman is good. Her years as a cat burglar have given her a wide variety of skills. However, she's not really someone who anyone would ask to train them, especially not someone like Batman. Batman's skill set is much more varied than hers could ever be, so what good does her "training" do for him?

3 Why Does Lex Luthor Let Bane Be?

Apex Predator Lex Luthor from DC Comics fighting the Justice League

Lex Luthor has been offering villains of all stripes help if they agree to join his Legion Of Doom. He does the same with the Bane, but Bane turns him down. Not only that, but Luthor admits that he respects Bane for cleaning up Gotham and doing what no one else has been able to do.

So, why would Lex respect Bane? Why would he allow Bane to deny him? Lex brings up Psycho-Pirate and how powerful he is, but Lex has Perpetua on his side, the mother of the multiverse, and has bonded with Martian Manhunter. He 's vastly more powerful than he's ever been. There's really no reason for him to let Bane off the hook so easily.

2 Why Does Thomas Wayne Allow Alfred To Be Killed?

Flashpoint Batman Puppeterring Bane(1)

Bane had a simple rule when it came to the Batfamily- if any of them enter the city, he would kill Alfred, Batman's loyal butler. Thomas Wayne, the Flashpoint Universe's Batman, held Alfred at Wayne Manor. When Damian Wayne breaks into the city and is eventually captured, Bane snaps Alfred's neck right in front of him.

Batman #84 reveals a lot of Thomas's history in the Flashpoint Universe and even shows the moment Martha Wayne, that universe's Joker, killed Alfred. It was a devastating moment for Thomas. So, why would he allow Bane to do the same? Especially knowing how this Alfred had taken care of his son all of those years. As readers would find out, Thomas had a lot more power than met in the eye in Bane's Gotham and could have easily stopped Bane and kept things running.

1 How Did Thomas Wayne So Easily Usurp Bane's Plan?

"City Of Bane" was the culmination of 75 issues worth of build-up. Bane's plan to take Gotham from Batman had a lot of moving parts and was pretty complicated when it came right down to it, but he was able to pull it off because of how smart he was and how well he planned things. However, the whole time, Thomas Wayne, the Flashpoint Batman, had his own counter plan.

Thomas wanted Bruce to stop being Batman, so he basically usurped Bane's plan. He acted as Bane's enforcer while getting the Ventriloquist on his side, which got Psycho-Pirate on his side. Bane had been planning this whole thing out for so long. How he was able to manipulate Bane so masterfully? Why didn't Bane use Psycho-Pirate on him? It was a great twist, but it felt so out of nowhere.
