DC is full of amazing characters, from heroes who love what they do to dastardly villains whose evil is irredeemable. These characters fight in amazing battles, doing everything they can to make the world a better place or gain even more power than they once had. Their legendary wars have some of the biggest stakes of them all, as they've almost spelled doom for the entire DC Multiverse.

In battles like these, heroes and villains alike have tried to make sacrifices to attain victory and while there have been many meaningful sacrifices, there have also been times when those actions were completely in vain.

10 Green Lanterns die by the dozen & it rarely has a bearing on anything

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps

The Green Lantern Corps is one of the most important organizations in the DC Universe, keeping the peace on countless worlds. The Corps is full of strange and interesting members, with some beloved members calling its ranks home. However, whenever there's a big event in the DC Universe, a whole lot of them die and it pretty much never matters.

Nameless cannon fodder can be quite useful and the Green Lantern Corps fit that bill. Whether it be fighting off evil Lantern Corps, massive cosmic threats, or all kinds of other threats, Green Lanterns die by the dozen and it rarely has a bearing on anything.

9 the Crime Syndicate tried to stop the anti-matter but failed miserably

original crime syndicate

Crisis On Infinite Earths is one of the biggest DC stories of all time. To let readers know just how big things were going to get, the book opened with the Crime Syndicate, the evil Earth-3 Justice League, trying to stop the anti-matter wave from destroying their universe and failing miserably. Each member fell to the wave, their sacrifices doing nothing to stop it.

CoIE had huge stakes and the best way to show that was to have one of the most powerful villain groups around completely and totally fail. The Crime Syndicate wasn't known for their altruism, so them even trying to stop the anti-matter wave was a big deal and this heroic moment wouldn't matter at all.

8 the only thing Supergirl's sacrifice accomplished was giving Anti-Monitor a sweet new suit of armor

Death of Supergirl Crisis on Infinite Earths

CoIE was full of big moments and big deaths; one of the biggest was Kara Zor-El's. The heroes, finally having found the base of the Anti-Monitor, went to confront him and he slapped them around at every turn. Supergirl stepped up, though, and was able to make a dent in the villain's plans, proving just how powerful she was and damaging his armor.

However, all the damage she caused didn't matter, as he was able to kill her with one titanic blast. Her attack and death had very little bearing on the conflict; the Anti-Monitor was able to escape and the universes were still in danger.

7 The Teen Titans Superboy-Prime Killed In Infinite Crisis barely affected anyone

Superboy Prime first kill Infinite Crisis

When Superboy-Prime was finally unleashed in Infinite Crisis, it was a much darker and bloody affair than anyone could imagine. At first, Prime and Conner Kent battled it out, with Conner getting the worst of it. Eventually, his Teen Titans teammates brought in their reserves and members of the JSA to help out. This action, however, made things worse.

Prime ended up killing several ex-Titans, like Pantha and Wildebeest, and their deaths did nothing but make Superboy-Prime even more whiny and violent. They didn't even slow him down one bit. The whole situation is made even worse when one realizes that their deaths not only failed to affect the battle but barely affected anyone afterward.

6 Terra wasn't even able to kill the Titans, as they were all able to escape her attack

Death of Terra Cropped

Terra is one of the most famous betrayers in the DC Universe's history, working with Deathstroke to try and destroy the team from within. The two almost succeeded but even then, members of the Titans were willing to give Terra the benefit of the doubt and try to help her. Terra wasn't having any of that and tried to use her earth-controlling abilities to end her former friends once and for all.

However, she lost control of her abilities and it cost her everything, including her life. She wasn't even able to kill the Titans, as they were all able to escape her attack. She died for nothing — her last tantrum was ineffectual and her legacy would be one of sorrow for all involved.

5 there was no reason for Firestorm to get stabbed

Death Of Firestorm

Firestorm is one of the most powerful humans on Earth in the DC Universe but his death in Identity Crisis was almost an afterthought. As members of the Justice League hunted down leads in Sue Dibney's death, Shazam, Vixen, Shining Knight, and Firestorm were fighting the Shadow Thief. Shadow Thief was able to get Shining Knight's sword and stabbed Firestorm with it.

This caused the Nuclear Man to go into meltdown and he flew off before exploding. While this action saved many, there was no reason for Firestorm to get stabbed — he wasn't saving anyone and his teammates all could have taken the hit and survived. It was a completely meaningless sacrifice.

4 if Flashpoint Batman just would have worked with Bruce, he actually could have had a relationship with his son from another universe

Thomas Wayne as the Flashpoint Batman from DC Comics

Flashpoint Batman's sacrifice didn't involve his life, but rather his relationship with his son, Bruce. In his home universe, he lost Bruce at an early age and would eventually make his way to the regular DC Universe, where he would join Bane's plan in forcing Batman out of Gotham. Flashpoint Batman just wanted Bruce to stop being Batman, working behind the scenes to subvert Bane's schemes for his own end.

However, if he just would have worked with Bruce, he actually could have had a relationship with his son from another universe instead of antagonizing him and losing every chance of having his son in his life. Batman would have accepted this alternate version of his father and given him what he desired: a family.

3 Extant was still able to enact his schemes & nothing Hourman did was able to stop him

DC's Hourman from Adventure Comics.

One of the founding members of the JSA, Hourman, and his fellow team members were the first heroes to confront Extant in Zero Hour. The time-controlling villain would use his powers against the heroes of WWII, aging them and making them easy pickings. Hourman, along with teammates Doctor Mid-Nite and the Atom, would all fall to Extant's power.

While several of their teammates survived, it had more to do with their own power than it did anything Hourman and company accomplished. Extant was still able to enact his schemes and nothing Hourman did was able to stop him.

2 Batman's sacrificial act was not only meaningless but also almost doomed everything the heroes had won by defeating Darkseid

Batman fighting Darkseid.

Batman was captured by Darkseid's forces in Final Crisis and played a pivotal role in the final battle against the God of Evil. For his troubles, he was hit with the Omega Sanction and sent back in time. This was all part of Darkseid's plan, as Batman would move forward through time, chased by the demon Barbatos, building up Omega radiation. If everything had gone as planned, his arrival in the present would have destroyed everything.

Batman put himself in this position, making a "heroic" sacrifice but he didn't have to do this at all. He could have given the Radion bullet to one of the Flashes who were also fighting Darkseid at the time and go and do anything else.

1 By sacrificing his place in the heroic world, Superman would start a chain of events that would include the death of millions in Kansas & many heroes & villains

Superman from Kingdom Come flying towards the reader

Superman in Kingdom Come didn't give up his life but he did give up being Superman and that pretty much set every tragedy of the story into motion. It all started with The Joker killing the entire staff of the Daily Planet. This attack would see everyone looking for Joker, a hunt that would end with the villain's death at the hands of Magog.

The people of Metropolis would applaud this murderous action and Magog would challenge Superman to a fight, with the winner becoming Metropolis's new hero. Superman would refuse to fight, instead going to the Fortress of Solitude and abandoning the superhero community. By sacrificing his place in the heroic world, Superman would start a chain of events that would include the death of millions in Kansas and many heroes and villains.
