Most characters from the DC Comics communicate with each other using English. However, given how wide the DC universe is, it would be arrogant to believe every one of them is a native English speaker. In reality, the DC comic books feature characters of many different cultures. Depending on their backgrounds, some of these characters speak more than one language.

But others are fictional, like Aqualad's mastery of Atlantean and Superman's Kryptonian language skills. Regardless of their nature, these languages help to make the DC universe more interesting than it already was.

10 El Gaucho Is Like An Argentinian Batman

Inspired by Batman, Santiago Vargas, an Argentinian former secret agent, became a heroic vigilante in his country. He took the moniker El Gaucho, based on the iconic horsemen from South America, and joined the Batmen of All Nations as well as Batman Incorporated.

As an Argentinian man, Santiago Vargas uses Argentinian Spanish often, especially for one-liners during battle. This character, created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff in 1955, started as a Latinx stereotype but soon became a serious attempt to depict South American creole culture.

9 Katana Is A Japanese Native

Tatsu Yamashiro, also known as Katana, was created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. She's a samurai warrior who has teamed up with the Justice League and the Birds of Prey. Her sword, the Soultaker, captures the souls of anyone who dies by its blade, making it one of the most dangerous weapons in DC comics.

Katana had a regular life in Japan, where her husband Maseo was murdered by the Yakuza, a tragedy that led to her superheroic career. Since she was born and raised in this country, Japanese is Katana's mother tongue but she's a fluent English speaker.

8 The Blue Beetle Often Uses Spanish

After bonding with an alien scarab-shaped artifact, Jaime Reyes gained a super-suit that includes many different devices, such as an energy cannon, a grappling hook, and a sword. As the Blue Beetle, Reyes joined the Teen Titans and then the Justice League in their fight against evil. The character was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner.

Many don't know Jaime Reyes as well as they should, but he's a proud Latinx man living in El Paso, Texas. He's a second-generation Latinx who lives in both American and Mexican cultures. Given this, he bounces between English and Spanish perfectly. Latinx actor Xolo Maridueña will portray this Blue Beetle in the upcoming DCEU film of the same name.

7 Nightrunner's First Language Is French

Nightrunner, or Coureur Nocturne, is a vigilante created by David Hine and Kyle Higgins. Named Bilal Alsselah, he's a French-Algerian man who seeks to be a symbol for what's right and just in Paris. Bilal is an expert in parkour as well as a free-run athlete. He's also a member of Batman Incorporated and the Justice League Europe.

As a member of the Maghrebi community in Paris, he speaks perfect French. However, in order to communicate with his international teammates, he uses English. Nightrunner is sometimes known as the Batman of France.

6 Beatriz Da Costa Mixes Portuguese, Spanish & English All The Time

Originally a supermodel, Beatriz da Costa became an undercover agent for the Brazilian government. During her time as a secret agent, Beatriz was exposed to a pyroplasmic explosion that gave her fire-based superpowers. This is how she became the heroine called Green Flame, and then Fire. She has been a prominent Justice League member for many years.

As a Brazilian woman, Beatriz's mother tongue is Brazilian Portuguese. However, she also speaks Spanish due to its importance in South America, as well as English, which she learned when she moved to New York. She often throws in Spanish and Portuguese words when speaking English.

5 Jericho Communicates Using ASL

Joseph William Wilson, also known as Jericho, is a metahuman who can control others' bodies simply by making eye contact. He's the son of the villain Deathstroke and one of the strongest members of the Teen Titans. Marv Wolfman and George Peréz created him.

When he was a child, Jericho was kidnapped by Deathstroke's enemies. The mercenary was able to save his son but the criminals cut his throat, rendering him unable to speak. Given this problem, Jericho also uses his super-abilities to speak through others. Whenever he's unable to talk using someone else's voice, Jericho communicates by using American Sign Language.

4 Kaldur'ahm Speaks English & Atlantean

The former Aqualad and the newest Aquaman, Kaldur'ahm was born to a Xebellian woman and Black Manta but abandoned on the surface to be adopted, so he grew up effectively human. When Kaldur learned the truth about his origins, he grew closer to Aquaman and his underwater kingdom, Atlantis.

Given that he was raised as a human, but later in life, he became an Atlantean, Kaldur first learned English and then learned Atlantean in order to communicate with his people. According to Young Justice, the young man is completely fluent in this fictional language.

3 The Huntress Visited Italy Often

After her whole family was murdered by Stefano Mandragora, Helena Bertinelli became a Batman-inspired vigilante from Gotham City. She started to fight crime while trying to get revenge under the moniker of the Huntress. This character was created by Joey Cavalieri and Joe Staton.

Before her family was slaughtered, Helena used to spend the summers in Italy, the country of origin for the Bertinelli family. Additionally, she has always made sure to stay in touch with her Italian heritage, so she learned the language. Although she's a native English speaker, Helena is also fluent in Italian.

2 Superman & Supergirl Speak Kryptonian

Although they now live as heroes on Earth, both Kal-El and Kara Zor-El were born on Krypton, a now-destroyed planet that had a very different culture from our world. One of the major differences was its language. All people from Krypton spoke Kryptonian, a language both Supergirl and Superman know.

Since Kara lived on Krypton until she was a teenager, she arrived on Earth already speaking Kryptonian. Kal-El's case is different. He arrived on Earth as a baby but learned the language as an adult after he found the Fortress of Solitude. Both Superman and Supergirl are also supposed to be super-intelligent, so technically, learning new languages should come super-easy to the pair.

1 Batman Is Actually A Polyglot

The sole heir to his parents' fortune, Bruce Wayne saw them die at the hands of a criminal when he was only a kid. After this, he trained himself to become a vigilante who would protect Gotham City. His new persona, Batman, monitors the city making sure that all evil-doers out there get what's coming for them.

In addition to training physically, Bruce Wayne trained mentally and made sure to acquire as many tools as possible for his vigilantism. For instance, he speaks around 40 languages, including Russian, Japanese, Korean, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and even Kryptonian, as is revealed in Batman/Superman #2 by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez.
