Jason Momoa, who currently plays Aquaman, may still be in the running to be cast as Lobo in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, but he won't start the new role until he's done with the one he has.

DC has addressed the rumors that Momoa will play Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter, and Gunn and Safran made it clear that this would not happen until after Momoa was done with Aquaman. Despite considerable speculation to the contrary, "Jason will not play two characters," said Gunn. With Aquaman sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to arrive in theaters on Dec. 25 this year, pushed back from an original release date of Mar. 17, fans will have a while to wait.

Jason Momoa's Passion for Lobo

And the Momoa Aquaman series might not even be done. "It's too early to say," Safran said. "Jason always thought Aquaman was a trilogy in his own mind, but he also loves Lobo. He's been very clear about that too." Momoa has mentioned before publicly that Lobo is his all-time favorite comic character. "He's never going to play two characters…" Safran said. "…but we'll figure it out after Aquaman 2," Gunn completed, suggesting that an announcement of either Aquaman 3 or a Lobo project won't be happening until next year.

A third Aquaman movie has yet to be officially confirmed, but Momoa may have hinted at it recently. "[I'm feeling] really f-king good," he said following a meeting with the co-studio heads. "Aquaman's not going anywhere, so it's alright," he said. He also seemed to agree with the timeline of playing one character fully after the other, adding that "then I might be dipping into some other things too."

Momoa's passion for Lobo has become common knowledge in the months since Gunn first teased that he was looking to include the character in his DCU. "That would be amazing if that happened," the actor said when asked if the "dream project" he was working on with Gunn involved Lobo. "It's definitely something I've collected my whole life. So, for all the fans who know me will know that I collect this comic book the most," he shared, which fits his well-documented love for Lobo. "So without giving you anything, if you're a real fan you'd know what I collect the most."

While Momoa's desire to play Lobo may date back to before he was cast as Aquaman, he's still got at least one movie to get out of the way first. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be Momoa's fourth and possibly final outing as the King of Atlantis, following his debut appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both versions of Justice League, and the first Aquaman in 2018, which scored big at the box office to become the second highest-grossing DC movie (behind Wonder Woman). It will reunite Momoa with Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman and more, including at least one Batman.
