John Ridley, writer of Future State: The Next Batman, revealed in a new interview that DC has long-term plans for its new Batman character after the Future State event comes to a close.

"Going into the next phases, I can't talk specifics for various reasons. But I can say that there is a long-term plan for what's going to happen," Ridley told CBR. "We wanted the story to feel unified. We don't want it to feel like there's a lot of different people operating in different spaces. That's good for the storytelling, that's good for the fans, and it's good for a cohesive universe."

Ridley went on to tease that "there is a very exciting plan in place. This project is the result of more than a year of thought, planning and improvising, as well as test driving things," he continued. "What we want to do with Tim [Fox] is provide him with an infrastructure, a support system, and go into what's been going on with Tim since his absence from the Batman corner of the universe."

The writer further explained that the creative team behind The Next Batman is approaching Tim's story similar to how they approached The Other History of the DC Universe. Specifically, Ridley revealed, they are "using elements that were already there but never fully explored," adding, "In this way, we plan to articulate who Tim is, where he's been and the dynamics of his relationship with his family."

Ridley concluded that after Future State wraps, there are specific plans to make Tim his own individual character and incorporate his story into the existing Batman universe. His comments come roughly two weeks after fellow DC writer James Tynion IV first teased that Tim Fox would play a big role in the Batman universe moving forward. At the time, Tynion revealed, "I think that it's fair to say that Tim Fox and everything with the Fox family in general, that we started setting up in the pages of Batman #101, will have a direct impact on the Gotham line next year -- from March and beyond. The shape that takes, I can't really get into yet, but just stay tuned."

It was previously announced that DC's two-month-long Future State event will present new stories about future and alternate versions of heroes such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in a series of miniseries and anthology titles. Ridley's four-issue The Next Batman series will center on Tim Fox, the first mainstream DC Universe Black Batman. The series will also be set in a futuristic version of Gotham City, where authorities have outlawed the activities of all masked heroes and villains.
