Written by Mark Waid with art by Mahmud Asrar, colors by Jordie Bellaire, and letters by Steve Wands -- Batman vs. Robin #1 pits The Boy Wonder against The Dark Knight in a magic-filled revenge tale of two of the most highly skilled fighters in the DC universe.

Batman vs. Robin #1 shows Damian trying to find his path in life by whatever means necessary, while Batman tries to reconcile with his past and fix the damage that Damian has caused. Damian is a child of two different worlds, and Batman vs. Robin #1 explores his struggle with that dissonance. It all comes to a head when he comes face to face with his father. Emotions run high, and the action heats up in this entertaining and heartfelt first issue.

Batman-vs-Robin-1-10-1

Damian Wayne has been through hell in recent stories, and Batman vs. Robin #1 continues his suffering. Taken over by the demonic legacy of his mother's bloodline, Damian seeks to kill his father Bruce Wayne. The two have been estranged, and although Bruce tries to get through to Damian, it doesn't work. Waid perfectly displays the conflicted relationship that Damian and Bruce have in Batman vs. Robin #1 with lines that will tug at readers' heartstrings and a surprise character returning that causes a tearful reunion for Bruce. Batman vs. Robin #1 is full of magic, and it challenges Batman in a way he hasn't experienced before.

Asrar's art perfectly complements Waid's writing. Asrar creates high-impact action scenes where magicians fling magical energy across the page as Batman takes out monsters. As chaotic and busy as the fighting can be, Asrar juggles numerous elements to guide the reader's eye across the page. Batman vs. Robin #1 captures Damian's headstrong nature through the certainty of his actions and the sternness of his face. Asrar infuses the panels with twisted body horror to highlight the consequences of Damian's meddling. Each element of this issue is brought together beautifully by Jordie Bellaire's colors. She balances the depth and coldness of the bat cave with the bright and glowing magic of battle.
