DC announced My First Comic, a new line for early readers that will be sold in 500 participating Wal-Mart stores across North America.
Composed of 48-page "flip-books," My First Comic anthologies contain both stories and activity pages. The first titles to debut in the line are focused on Batman and Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The Batman flip-book features stories taken from the 2003 series Batman Adventures, which ran for 17 issues and was set in the DC Animated Universe. These include "No Asylum" and "Free Man," which were written by Ty Templeton with pencils by Rick Burchett, and "Who Am I" and "Fowl Play," written by Dan Slott with pencils by Templeton. All four stories were originally printed in the first two issues of Batman Adventures.
Meanwhile, the Space Jam book contains original comics, including "Bat-Bunny vs. Superduck," which sees Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck dressing up as Batman and Superman in a script written by Sholly Fisch with art by Phillip Murphy. The two other stories in the volume, both scripted by Derek Fridolfs with artwork by Robert Pope, are "Welcome Home," which stars Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner, and "Spaced Out, which features Marvin the Martian.
“My First Comic is a great way to extend popular DC characters to a new audience that’s just learning to read, providing a gateway into other age-appropriate DC content, like our middle grade graphic novels,” said Nancy Spears, DC's Vice President of Revenue. “DC’s partnership with Walmart has been instrumental in presenting our characters and stories to a mass-market audience, and now parents who are reading our Walmart four-pack bundled comics and 100-page Giants can share the DC Super Hero experience with their children.”
DC's partnership with Wal-Mart kicked off in 2018 with the launch of the 100-Page Giant line, a revival of the anthologies the company was known for in the 1970s.
