Batman has been called many things over the decades. Dark. Brooding. Scary. But the word 'hilarious' usually doesn't come to mind. There are exceptions, like the Batman TV show, but for most modern Batman fans, he has always been the moody Dark Knight.

He wasn't always that way. For every Dark Knight Returns we have a Bat-Hombre. While fans always seem to get the dark and moody side of Batman, there are plenty of hilarious Bat-stories.

10 Batman V. Sleepiness

Batman Falling On Top Of Criminal Comic Panels

A backup story in Batman #222 sees our hero on his way home from exhausted from a night of crime-fighting when he sees a thief steal a camera. He approaches the victim and learns through sign language that the man is mute and his camera is his only means of income.

Batman chases after the thief but as seconds tick by, Batman is just getting more and more exhausted. Eventually, the thief is defeated when Batman just collapses on top of him. The man gets his camera back and asks for a pic of Batman, who can finally go home and go to sleep.

9 The Zebra Batman Rises

Zebra Batman

In Detective Comics #275, Zebra Man invents a machine that gives him magnetic powers, but after a battle with Batman, the Caped Crusader gets zapped as well. Without the regulator belt that Zebra Man has, Batman starts to repel people away from him. When he goes to capture Zebra Man, their similar charges also repel each other, making it difficult to grab the criminal.

Imagine seeing Zebra Batman walking down the street, pushing all forms of solid matter away from him!

8 The Rainbow Batman

Rainbow Batman

In Detective Comics #241, Robin saves a woman from getting hit by a car driven by some robbers but he hurts his arm in the process. He sees their faces and begins to hunt them down. Batman, on the other hand, starts to wear different colored costumes each night as they go out crime-fighting. Robin finally finds the thieves and Batman apprehends them and after this, Batman returns to his old costume.

Batman then says he mixed up his color palette to draw attention away from Robin and onto himself to avoid anyone making a connection between Robin's injured arm and Dick Grayson. Seems like there were better ways to do this, but at least we get the Rainbow Batman.

7 Mr. Mxyzptlk & Bat-Mite Destroy Reality

Worlds Funniest Mr. Mxyzptlk and BatMite Fighting

By the end of the book, they end up on the Kingdom Come Earth (yes, really) and end up destroying that reality as well. Finally, both are exhausted but start to laugh hysterically. After commenting on how much fun it was, they restore the realities they damaged and agree to do it again "next Tuesday."

6 Batman Marries Batwoman (Much To Robin's Dismay)

Batman #122 opens when Bruce Wayne goes out on a date with Kathy Kane (secretly Batwoman) and Dick Grayson starts to feel left behind. To his horror, the couple comes home married! Bruce finally reveals his secret identity to Kathy and she reveals she is Batwoman. Bruce insists that she should give up being Batwoman and stay home like a good wife to protect his secret identity (somehow).

When Batman and Robin go on their next outing, Kathy finds that her costume has been taken. Bruce tells her he did it, so she just takes one of his costumes and joins the fray, saying that a wife's place is next to her husband. During the battle, the loose cowl reveals her face and the criminals immediately recognize her as Kathy Kane Wayne and that must mean Batman is Bruce Wayne. Robin begins to scold her when Batman starts to shake him, only to find that Dick Grayson had been dreaming the whole time and Bruce had just returned from his date.

5 Batman Holds A Bat-Auction

Batman auctions off all his equipment

In 'The Day Batman Sold Out (Batman #191)," after fighting a villain named Ira Radon and accidentally throwing him into a nuclear reactor, Batman announces that he is retiring from crime-fighting and will be auctioning off all his equipment. On TV the next day, they hold a live auction selling off all Batman's gear. Batman reveals that after fighting Ira Radon, his batarang was hit with a beam of light that made it slightly irradiated. He finds that many of his tools are irradiated and is told by Ira Radon that if he doesn't retire, he will increase the radiation and kill Batman with radiation poisoning.

It's revealed later that the auction was a ruse and all his equipment was bought by Wayne Foundation employees. Batman later goes to fight Ira while encased in clay to prevent the radiation from harming him. This all seems like a lot of work just to fool someone that he's going to end up fighting anyway.

4 The Adventures Of Mummy Batman & Robin

batman robin mummy detective comics 320

Detective Comics #320 sees Batman and Robin run into an alien spacecraft that turns their skin green. To not give away their secret identities, they decide it's better to just run around crime-fighting dressed as mummy versions of themselves. Intrepid reporter Vicki Vale begins to suspect that Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson have turned green and that Batman and Robin showing up as mummies is pretty suspicious.

Her theory is squashed when Batman and Robin revert to their regular costumes while Bruce and Dick are still green-skinned. It's revealed later that while the effect of the alien spaceship wore off, they painted themselves green to keep Vicki Vale from learning their secret.

3 The World's Finest & Their Abominable Brats

World's Finest 157 Batman Superman camping with sons

Back in World's Finest #154, the world was introduced to Kal-El Jr. and Bruce Wayne Jr. In #157, the kids had been misbehaving and almost missed out on their camping trip with their fathers... who were in their costumes, for some reason. After arriving at the campsite, they decide to run off since they are being treated so unfairly. Later, they return and apologize for their bad behavior. Batman and Superman decide to start taking them on some of their missions so they can learn responsibility.

Quickly they see that their sons are making some big mistakes and even sabotaging missions. After Batman and Superman are captured by some criminals, the kids even laugh at them. Right after, the real Kal-El Jr. and Bruce Wayne Jr. appear to save their fathers, they reveal they were swapped with Mr. Mxyzptlk Jr. and Bat-Mite Jr. on the camping trip. What a twist?

2 The Bat Baby Strikes Back

Bat baby fights crime

Batman #147 sees a scientist uses a ray gun to turn Batman into a baby, but that doesn't stop him from fighting crime. With the mind and strength of an adult Batman, he just adapts his costume and continues fighting criminals. At first, the criminal underworld seems confident fighting Bat-Baby, but they quickly learn age is only a number.

Batman and Robin eventually track down the scientist. While Robin fights off his henchmen, Bat-Baby reverts to his adult body. Batman does seem taken with this adventure and his time as Bat-Baby and even keeps his costume in the trophy room for a time.

1 The Joker's Comedy Of Errors

Joker comedy of errors

This one is the most juvenile entries ever, but it's just that impossibly funny. In 'The Joker's Comedy Of Errors (Batman #66),' one of Joker's most recent capers with a newspaper ends in failure and is referred to as a "boner," an old-timey slang term for blunder. With the modern interpretation of the word, it makes this story a hilarious read when Joker proclaims that "Gotham City would rue the day it mentioned 'boner'" and that he would "show them how many boners the Joker can make!" Joker would then go on to recreate some of the biggest (ahem) boners that history had ever seen.

It's a read that will leave you unable to breathe since the script repeats the word "boner" about a million times — which seems like something the Joker would want.
