Filming is now underway on Warner Bros. and DC Films' Batgirl.

"Day One of [Batgirl]," co-director Adil El Arbi wrote on Instagram. His post also included a picture of a clapper board emblazoned with the new Batgirl logo, a desk nameplate suggesting Leslie Grace's Barbara Gordon is a police officer and what looks to be a copy of Simon Singh's The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography. There's also a garland, which could be indicative of the current time of year or a clue that the film takes place during Christmas.

Batgirl was announced in March 2017, at which time it was said that Joss Whedon would write, direct and produce the film. A little over a year later, it was announced that Whedon had departed, and in May 2021, it was confirmed that Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would helm the project from a script by The Flash and Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) writer Christina Hodson.

As for the cast, the long search for a live-action Barbara Gordon came to an end this past July when Grace was announced as Batgirl. "I open it and it says, 'I'm Batgirl'… and my brain broke," the actor explained. "It was an incredible moment. When I say incredible, I mean the textbook definition of, I could not believe it. My brain actually broke when I got the news." She also noted that she immediately "bought every comic and just started asking so many questions" in preparation for the part.

Grace is joined by the DC Extended Universe's Commissioner James Gordon, J.K. Simmons, who reprises his role from Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League. This time around, however, Gordon is expected to have a "more significant" role.

Also on board is Brendan Fraser as the film's main antagonist. While many believe he'll play Firefly, this has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros. or DC.

Batgirl will premiere exclusively on HBO Max and has yet to receive a release date.
