Prime Video is close to striking a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery that could see DC Animation content join the streaming service.

Speaking during the Content London convention, according to Deadline, Warner Bros. Discovery executive Channing Dungey confirmed that the companies are in active negotiations. "With animation we used to be about staying in-house but now we are doing it on different platforms," Dungey said. "HBO Max is the first stop but we are in the process of closing a big deal with Amazon featuring DC branded content in animation." The extent of the deal was not disclosed and it remains unknown when the deal will be closed.

Dungey continued to explain the company's stance on content production going forward, noting that extensive budgets aren't an immediate sign of success. "There was a feeling for a while that if you’re not spending $10M an hour then you’re not doing your job," she added. "But it doesn’t take that to make a great show and doing things differently in the pandemic underscored that."

In the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery's recent merger that saw David Zaslav take control as CEO, the company has targeted its animated offerings as a core means of cost-cutting. A slew of Cartoon Network series, including platform exclusives such as Infinity Train, were suddenly delisted from the service, angering many subscribers. It remains unknown whether any of the axed series will eventually return to the service.

If the deal is concluded, it's unclear whether Prime Video will begin producing new animated content based on the DC or whether the platform will simply act as a distributor. HBO Max is currently the home of several popular superhero shows, including Harley Quinn and Young Justice. While the former is confirmed to be returning for another season in the future, the fate of the latter remains in the air despite calls for a fifth season.

As for Prime Video, the opposing service also offers a collection of popular and critically-acclaimed animated series about on superheroes. Based on Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker's brutal comic book series, Invincible follows Mark Grayson as he comes to terms with being the super-powered son of the all-might Omni-Man. In a similarly violent fashion, The Boys Presents: Diabolical is an animated spinoff based on the popular superhero parody series The Boys.

It's currently unknown when Warner Bros. Discovery will conclude its deal with Prime Video.
