The red band trailer for Netflix's latest original series Daybreak has been released, blending post-apocalyptic mayhem with teen comedy sensibilities that feels right out of a John Hughes movie.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Brian Ralph, a nuclear apocalypse leads a high school misfit to search the wastelands of Glendale, Calif. in search of his missing girlfriend while adults have been infected by the lethal radiation and transformed into zombie-like Ghoulies.

The trailer mashes up the irreverent coming-of-age comedy of Hughes' classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- further underscored by star Matthew Broderick in a prominent role -- with the post-apocalyptic feel of the Mad Max and Fallout franchises. Familiar high school cliques like the jocks and cheerleaders have formed their own tribal factions in the ruins of Glendale, as protagonist Josh Wheeler searches for his girlfriend in his radically altered hometown.

Netflix had greenlit an adaptation of the darkly funny graphic novel last year for a ten-episode first season directed and executive produced by Brad Peyton (Rampage). Aron Eli Coleite, who is also attached to Netflix's planned adaptation of Locke & Key, also serves as an executive producer on the post-apocalyptic comedy.
