The following contains spoilers for Day Shift, now streaming on Netflix.

In Netflix's Day Shift, Jamie Foxx's Bud masqueraded as a pool cleaner in Los Angeles, but he was really slaughtering vampire nests. He did this to get their fangs to sell on the black market. The film did try to slightly differentiate Bud's journey, though, by having Dave Franco's Seth, a rep from the vampire hunters' Union, as his sidekick, trying to get Bud to obey the hunters' rules. However, by the time the film concluded, both ended up being pretty one-dimensional characters in a plot filled with holes and unanswered questions.

Why Did Audrey Look Young?

Audrey is the main villain in Day Shift

Audrey, the vamp queen, moved her real estate empire into the City of Angels to garner land for her bloodsuckers, only to target Bud. It turns out that the old vampire lady he killed at the beginning of Day Shift was Audrey's daughter. She was over 90 years old, but it's never explained why Audrey, an Elder, looked so young. It'd have been interesting to know if she used a mystical ritual learned from all her years.

Why Wasn't Bud More Discrete?

Day Shift had Jamie Foxx's Bud hunting vampires

Bud pretended to clean a pool before masking up and going into the nest containing Audrey's daughter. This made no sense, though, because cameras outside would already have picked him up. Had he worn a disguise outside, that would have been smarter. In addition, he used a pillow as a silencer for his shotgun but didn't even place it on the barrel. Thus, it still made a loud noise that should have alerted neighbors. Funnily enough, after killing Audrey's daughter, Bud stumbled outside and drove off, with no one hearing the loud bang.

What's the Purpose of the Vampire Classes?

Day Shift Foxx Franco Outside

Seth classified the vamps for Bud -- Southern and Eastern, based on their locale. Others were Juveniles who looked pale and fed on small animals. Uber vamps could live if decapitated. Lastly, Spiders were foot soldiers. Yet none of this mattered because Bud killed all vamps using the same methods. They even raided a house that freaked Seth out because all these classes were living together without a social hierarchy. But Day Shift never addressed why and totally dropped the camaraderie of these bloodsuckers, leaving fans wondering why so much would be set up, only to be ignored.

Who Bankrolled Day Shift's Union?

The Nazarian brothers were the best vampire hunters in Day Shift

The Union pays good money for fangs, as opposed to the black market Bud sold to after he got kicked out. It had a fancy headquarters and lots of weapons and boasted chapters across America. Yet it's never revealed who bankrolls the organization. Running the entire operation on Union fees doesn't seem feasible, so it'd have been nice to learn more about who started the Union, the backers, and what exactly humans do with these expensive fangs.

What's Bud's Origin Story?

Day Shift Foxx Franco Truck

Bud kept his hunting secret from his wife, Joss, with the distrust being why she left with their daughter, Paige. However, it's never revealed how he got into hunting or why he chose it over his family. Day Shift would have made Bud a much better character by showing this history. He did have nifty tricks of the trade, after all, such as using soap with a skunk's essence so vamps couldn't sniff and track him.

Why Did Heather Turn on Audrey?

Heather helped save the day in Day Shift

Heather was a vamp that Audrey turned and had spying on Bud as his neighbor. Bud found out and came after her, only for Heather to switch sides. It's never explained why she sided with Bud, though, especially since she feared Audrey and her large vampire network. It seems this was done just to give Bud a vampire ally in the finale when no motive was provided for her betrayal or Bud believing she'd remain loyal to him.

How Did Heather Sell Bud and Seth Out?

Day Shit had Bud killing Audrey to save his family

Bud went to Paige's home, only to find her and Joss restrained by Audrey. The queen even bit Seth, leaving him unconscious and turning, but Day Shift never divulges exactly what Heather did to sell Bud out. She didn't know Bud's family, nor did she know Seth, so there's no info she could have given to send Audrey's crew there and lure Seth over. In fact, Heather wasn't even needed, as Audrey could have just used a phone book once she got Bud's name from a pawn shop. Heather's methods and overall importance just weren't fleshed out to truly show what she contributed and how.

Why Not Use the Nazarians Later?

Day Shift Howey

The Nazarian brothers were soldiers who helped Bud and Seth clean out the LA nest. They didn't reappear in the movie after, though, which was disappointing, as they had a good rapport in the field with Bud. Given he had to go rescue his family from Audrey, he could have called them for backup, as they'd have enjoyed it, getting lots of fangs to cash in.

Why Didn't Audrey Just Turn Paige and Joss at Home?

Day Shift Meagan Jamie

Audrey left Bud at the house with Seth turning so Seth could feed on him. But what was odd was that she said her big plan was to turn Paige at the queen's lair so the child could then turn Joss. This was her way of making Bud suffer, but if Seth ripped him apart, he'd never have seen his family become vamps. It's forced drama because Audrey could have turned Paige at the house so Bud could watch her feed on Joss then and there -- a more fitting punishment, as opposed to leaving Bud alone with Seth.

How Did Audrey Die?

Bud killed Audrey in Day Shift

Audrey got beheaded in the final fight against Bud. Her severed head then cursed Bud and turned pale, but this is inconsistent because she's an Uber vamp. Per the rules of Day Shift, she should have remained alive, just like Seth did when Bud severed his head after Audrey turned him into a fellow Uber vamp. It's never even shown if Bud de-fanged Audrey, yet he's spotted holding up a bottle with teeth in the end, despite not being shown collecting any.

How Did Seth Become a Warrior?

Day Shift Foxx Franco Workshop

Day Shift had Bud murdering many experienced vamps easily throughout. But Seth, a bumbling geek who couldn't fight at all, instantly became an elite killer once he turned. The movie never explained how he transformed into this warrior, though. It was all plot convenience so he could help Bud and Heather take down Audrey's lair in the film's conclusion.

Why Ignore Day Shift's Sunscreen Arc?

The Nazarian brothers were the best vampire hunters in Day Shift

The Nazarians and Bud let a vamp run off into the daylight, with Bud pointing out he had on a special sunscreen that kept him from burning in the sun. But the film never revealed why they let him go. Had they cornered him, he'd have spilled the beans about how he got the chemical from Audrey. Sadly, Day Shift axed the sunscreen from the plot, which could have had day-walkers hunting the heroes proactively to splice in more action and intensity.

Who Is El Jefe in Day Shift?

Big John from Day Shift (1)

El Jefe's mentioned as the rival vampire boss Audrey was feuding with in LA. But Day Shift never brought the character into play, nor did it tease him for a sequel. Some fans wondered if Bud's friend, Big John (Snoop Dogg), was El Jefe, seeing as he survived a vampire bite. But all this, including John somehow remaining alive, wasn't detailed again.

Why Did Joss Stay?

Joss stayed with Bud in Day Shift

Joss opted to remain in LA after Bud saved them from Audrey, confirming she was giving him a second chance. But this didn't add up. His lies endangered them, so she should have been fleeing immediately. Bud's job was deadly and ran the risk of vamps coming after his loved ones. Thus, maintaining distance would be better to keep Paige safe.

Day Shift is now streaming on Netflix.
